Got to read news on Exxon’s toxic culture? Replace Exxon with Shell and it applies 100%. Throw in corruption at higher levels as an addition.

Here’s a real-time micro example of what to do if management promotes a toxic environment at work:
“Two current Twitter employees said on Thursday that they plan to reject the ultimatum, citing a toxic work environment they say….has (been) introduced.”
SO……You can sit by and carp about “management“ OR…..hit the road to more pleasant work surroundings. Your call.
This is really great reading and thoroughly entertaining when read stoned. I marvel at the brilliance.
As corporations are run by humans, there can be corruption at any level. Lease operators taking cash advances on company credit cards, personal favors for steering work to vendors, falsified invoices, etc. Internal auditors have many documented examples. If you see it, call it out. But generalized accusations are worthless.
It's a good read, though it is really underpinned by interviews with a small number of people. Is anyone really surprised that the data scientist graduate hire is disappointed with how much impact his work really has?
One thing that rings true for Shell is "positive spin" being rewarded. Look at some of the cr---y projects that have been greenlit. Write down some of the things being pumped up in Town Halls and then check on how they're doing In a few years. Look at who's being promoted to job group A-- they are no longer credible with technical staff.
If you like toxicity with a side of corruption along with your paycheck, please raise your hand. Wow! Lots of the readers here do! Whining at the office never goes out of style.
Ok, if you’re an employee of any organization and you truly believe it has a “toxic culture” and corrupt leadership, leave.
If working anywhere is so distressing that you’re always carrying that weight around, get out.
Applies to employment, partnerships, personal relationships, marriage, etc.
Take control, get out and leave the emotional baggage on the desk.
