Thread regarding Twitter layoffs

🤓 PT, College Mania!, Asperger's, The History of Tech, and Twitter

Am certainly not a fan of PT, but this 2015 conversation at the Aspen Institute is worth listening to for historical context. He talks about failure in his professional life. He talks about the mania of elite college degrees (some of you may have one). He mentions all the folks in Silicon Valley in charge who are neurodivergent. PT also puts the last tech bo-m into perspective--relating it to the larger, more significant, history of technology. PT also mentions jobs at Twitter, thinking that workers there would have jobs for decades. Oh well...

@PR stunt, that's what I'd bet, that EM gets the workers he deserves, and that takes Twitter (and Silicon Valley) further down the rabbit ho-e...

@Dahn, well I'm not sure how you got there from a post about Thiel.

I sincerely hope Musk gets the employees he deserves.

Remember that time the "superhero foreign employee" stole all that IP from Tesla and took it to a Chinese competitor? Good times!

@PR stunt, great comment. Sounds like you've been around awhile. You should write a book about those days as a caddy. As far as my previous comment, I was referring to Musk and his interest in hiring "superhero" foreigners to suppress wages, to more easily control the workforce, and to steal ideas without recognition. And with Twitter, there's no resistance because many techies believe they don't need to unionize.

As usual @Dahn I have no idea what you're going on about.

Yeah, I'm aware that Thiel and Musk are both members of the PayPal mafia. They're also "libertarians" who started companies designed to hoover up tax $$$$ (Palantir, SpaceX).
Thiel also took Gawker Media down because they hurt his feelings.

I used to think Thiel was worse than Musk, and that was saying something, but now I really see no difference. They also both use (purportedly) being "neurodivergent" as an excuse for being as-----s. IMO it's a cop out and an insult to the ND community.

Fun fact, about 40 years ago I had a friend on the staff at Aspen. Members pay no more attention to the staff than they do the potted plants, and speak freely (and repusively) in front of them. He was an early view into a world that was even more rarified than what I saw caddying at an exclusive golf club.

The rich are different from you and I.
They suck!

@PR stunt, I take it that you don't work at Twitter anymore. Thiel and EM are long-time PIC. BTW: sounds like Americans may become rarer at Twitter.
