Enrollment continues to decline at University of New Orleans

“What we’re seeing right now is not unique. A lot of urban-serving institutions are seeing a bit of an ebb," said John Nicklow, president of the University of New Orleans, where new-student enrollment is down 13% to 999 students and total enrollment has dropped 11% to 7,112 students. “These headwinds are impacting the majority of institutions across Louisiana and the nation."

I think in a value-driven economy private colleges are going to have to really show they can compete with the growth/convenience of online learning and of course the land grant research universities that offer more amenities, or risk being merged with other local colleges. UNO is a good school. Although all colleges think of themselves as institutions of higher ed, they are a business and businesses merge or go under all the time. Most colleges like UNO are holding on just with the lure of playing sports in college and 50% or more of their enrollment is athletes. That is of great value to them and their parents but the business is ultimately run on education. As more Faculty find online teaching/tutoring convenient and lucrative, we have seen most public colleges move 30-40% or more of their course offerings online to meet the demand of faculty and students. The lure of grandiose facilities and coffee shops in your dorm is hard to compete with students being able to hold down a good-paying 25-hour-a-week job during the day and doing homework at night. And just like you've seen retailers affected by online buying, we will see colleges close and merge due to online learning.
