I’ve been here for a little over two years and in all that time I have been worried about layoffs. I can’t believe that it was always like this. I can’t imagine spending ten or more years at a company and constantly having to worry about my job. When did this start?

Unless you work for the government there is no such thing as job security. Sure, when times are fat it can feel that way, but as the folks at Google, Meta, Salesforce, Amazon and others are learning they were never safe from the reaper.
My ex boss has been at Oracle for 15+ years. I know someone who has been there 30. The key is to own something important or be speaking to customers it seems.
LE will not be around forever. Oracle is fading away....with him.
Oracle Cerner and AI are both fast moving Oracle products to be shelved.
With consolidating reorganized , it will be interesting to see who is left in mid mgmt.
LE's org may not be so stable. He's going to get his money.
Oracle has it had tied up and the longer he waits the greater the chances of him not getting it. Nashville real estate was another big mistake.
Did Oracle ever have Job security? Yes, and it still does. How? It flows from the top, and has been this way for many many years. When you join Oracle, what org do you join? SC or LE orgs? We used to have MH, but he died, so there is only two now. If you tie what SC's org does, and what LE's org does, you start to get an idea about turnover and job security. Location/country play a significant role too. If you are in development (LE's org) and you are making products and fixing things, you have a much greater chance at longevity. SC's org - Marketing, Sales, HR and tons of fluffy bits, your chances of being laid off are exponentially greater. SC cuts from her orgs first, as she knows where to save money. She is ruthless (although a likeable persona) and is 100% committed to shareholder value. Make no mistake about that. When she's done cutting in her orgs, she asks around the other EVPs and asks for numbers from other orgs, based on the numbers that she manages. She can only push so hard against what LE wants. LE's orgs are generally stable. Staying out of SC's org is a good place to stay longer at Oracle. Ultimately, there is a matrix that deals with so many factors, that's its too hard to really nail it down and give advice. Generally speaking, like any company, if you are near the money, and provide value to the company and do actual work and deliver on time and to the benefit of Oracle - then you are probably going to be ok in the long term.

over the past 20 years I just stopped worrying about getting laid off. there is no point, it can happen at any company at any moment. keep you resume updated.
One of my last bosses at Oracle became an Oracle employee during the 90s when her company was acquired. Even though she managed to survive until retiring a few years ago she saw many RIFs over the years. When talking about them she mentioned they were every 2 or 3 years through most of the time she was in the company and were usually directed at dying products.
Things have changed. Layoffs now are more frequent, bigger and in all areas of the company. There are lots of factors that could explain the change but my bet is on the fact that executive bonuses are tied more to stock performance than in the past making the executives more focused on stock prices than long term strategy.
“ Oracle employees around 10-12 years ago: about 98K
Today: 160,400+ “
Do you have any idea how many companies were acquired by O during the last 12 years ? How many people were employed. in those companies ? If you do your math right , it will give you answers to your question.
"other companies are thriving and creating thousands of jobs."

So, what was your point again?
It's interesting to actually hear when Oracle was stable. I would love to know more.
All that Oracle achieved early on and the amount of money that was made will briefly be mentioned in the years to come. The corrupt mid mgt that would NOT promote based on merit for fear they would be replaced, will be discussed in business schools -- how not to manage. Nothing makes a true manager look better than, to know how to hire and promote good talent. The most successful highest paid coaches, know how to recruit and combine good talent that they find. It's totally up to the coach and his staff.
They have more money than any school but, if they don't know to manage they lose. \
Oracle has failed with this group of middle managers. No amount of money can buy back the reputation it once had. It has to be earned. They had everything they needed to honestly, manage and promote the right people. There has been alot of good talent that has gone through Oracle throught the years that, are doing great things in other places. Can't rightly call the other places, competitors because they are so far ahead of Oracle that, there is no competition. Oracle's name means very little. Sadly, Oralce middle management has broken the company and themselves down. Lieing cheating, abusing and taking everything they can from a company's greatest asset, it's employees, is poor managment performance. Oracle middle mgmt can not grasp that one simple concept that, employees are a company's greatest asset. In fact, most middle managers will argue the opposite which, is all telling of how little they know.
It will be interesting to see how long it will take for upper management to understand the damage that this group of middle mgmt has caused and if, they will ignore or do something about it. The general public will know the truth before long. People ask all the time, what happened at Oracle? It would be to upper mfmt's advantage to do the right thing, clean things up, make themselves look better and as a result stock price will soar. Trying to cover up the mistakes that were made will only make them look bad and reporters wil have a field day uncovering even more ...not to mention the adverse affect all of this will have on stock price.
Oracle could use some good PR not, more bad PR. The name, Oracle means relatively nothing to the younger and smarter IT population.
I can’t say for sure that this is when it started, but until about 5-6 years ago I didn’t experience any layoffs and wasn’t really aware of the threat of them. Since then I’ve seen every team I’ve worked in decimated and rebuilt roughly every 18 months. We’ve lost some really talented people. I feel for them but most have moved on to better things.
‘ You can’t blame your pen for your poor handwriting ’
epic analogy !!!!!
‘ Influx of H1B over the last 20 years ‘
with the same influx you are talking about , other companies are thriving and creating thousands of jobs . O is failing because of strategic decisions it’s C level executives are making .
How long will you blame everything on H1b ? You can’t blame your pen for your poor handwriting 😊
Most of customers related positions will be eliminated by A.I. in next few years. Wake up and time to move on for better, folks.
Influx of H1B over the last 20 years and intentional moves of groups to India. I support an ERP system bought by Oracle and noticed a significant drop in support capabilities around 2015. They are great at deflecting, horrible at determining root causes and fixing.
Oracle should do an audit of how many mid level managers brought in their spouses into this company!!!
‘When did this start? ‘.
It started towards the second half of 201x’ s . During the 2008 - 2009 recession O was actually a relatively stable place . Non creative top management and corrupt middle management has destroyed this company. So many in middle management has brought in their spouses over other eligible candidates into this company just using their influence.
