I understand why those of us who cannot find a new job are still here, but I don't understand how it is possible that so many people with great skills, who are very marketable, are still here?

some are very lazy and hang around the office since they are "favourites" of micromanagers. obviously they cannot find such a luxury elsewhere thus they stay. others are too scared to leave their comfort zone and think that this company is the greatest thing..which is not. In fact the past few years is going downhill in every aspect of the business

The answer is - because they want to.
A lot of companies that say they’re remote, really aren’t.
They call it work-life balance. For years they do nothing or bare minimum. Many deserve for the layoffs.
