Thread regarding Giant Eagle layoffs

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU GIANT EAGLE

On Saturday Dec 23 our family was holding our Christmas celebration. At noon I realized I still needed 2 items. Knowing the day before Christmas Eve is the busiest shopping day at a grocery store I was very hesitant about running to Giant Eagle for my 2 items but it is the closest store. I ended up making the trip and to my surprise my local Giant Eagle wasn’t even busy. When I first pulled into the lot I thought they were closed. Once I was in the store I had no problem getting the items I needed a checking out. After talking with some of the employees they said the store hasn’t been busy all week due to high prices. They actually said over the last year business has really dropped off. One employee said most of the regular customers they used to see are now shopping at other stores that have reasonable priced items. So once again THANK YOU GIANT EAGLE for having high prices and running customers off. Keep up the good work.

Business plan? BUSINESS PLAN?? How about they eliminate all the cost center executives in the company since that is all they do, cost the company money without any sort of income. I’ve never seen a company so top heavy as Giant Eagle. For example, HEB (and their premium brand Country Market that is far better than Market District) had about 1/3 the amount of corporate staff as Giant Eagle and is much more successful Giant Eagle in the endless ways a supermarket can operate. Not only that, they are the highest rated grocery chain in the entire United States between customers AND employees. Yet, somehow they manage to do this with a substantially less corporate staff structure. So…. At the end of the day, Giant Eagle is still a massive joke and I stopped shopping there last year after getting tired paying Heinens prices with Walmart service levels at best.

I truly, and I really mean truly, hope the company folds one day, that will show just how under qualified their “executives” truly are! When this happens, and it will, I look forward to asking “is my straw is in the bag?” as I leave the McDonalds drive thru they are qualified for!

Ugh, I hate that place with so much fury!

Lots of cynical Monday morning quarterbacks on this one. Instead of throwing rocks from the sidelines, maybe put together a business case that demonstrates improved efficiencies that will reduce costs and allow for pricing investments. It’s always easy to throw rocks at the individuals that have the courage to lead.

And the prices would not go down if they sold the fuel stations (which has been discussed). GE has a lot more overhead than those places. Which one has 15 clerks walking around the store? Full service deli, bakery, meat etc. which has 5+ lanes open with a cashier?

Those people don't stand there for free.
So again, you like clean stores that don't make you feel like you walked into a warehouse? You like having a full service experience? You gotta pay for it.

Do you understand the buying power that Aldi, Walmart and Target has? From the 90's, Giant Eagle has never wantes to enter into the "club card" program. David decision that the family has kept, so I won't even talk about then.

Bottlm Dollar foods with the backing of Ahold/DelHaize left town with their tails between their legs.

If you want walmart prices, enjoy your walmart cleanliness and service. Trust me, most people will gladly pay an extra $20 per cart to get a quality GE experience over walmart trash. And aldi's? Cmon. Thst food is bottom of the barrell. You couldn't pay me to eat anything in their meat dept.

I don’t think Giant Eagle is dominating the market anymore. Sure Aldi, Walmart and other competitors prices have gone up but not like Giant Eagle prices. Remember Giant Eagle prices are higher because that’s how they pay for fuel perks. You may think your getting a discount on gas but your actually paying for it with higher food prices.

Do you guys understand why the weekly ad came back? It's a 1 page flyer to be a hook to get people in the store. People are willing to pay a higher price for GE quality and service.

And in case you don't shop around....Aldi's prices have also gone up. GE and high prices is about a 40 year old "problem", yet they continue to dominate the market, no matter what club or discount store comes in.

If you people are not comaining, you are not happy.

The week of Christmas our store built the biggest turkey/ham display ever and our sales were down

“Build it high watch it fly”

Wait. You’re telling me that that sales are still high because Billy has weekly sales and kept turkey and ham prices low?? Really?? Just think if all the other items were reasonably priced. Sales would be beyond high.. Give me a break

My Giant Eagle actually allowed employees to go home early on Saturday due to lack of business

Strange. The sales totals are still very high. Bill's strategy of having a weekly special item, as well as carrying turkey/ham prices at sale price for 3
Weeks before each respective holiday have kept sales on target.

I'm glad you were able to get what you needed and didn't have a long line. Hope you had a merry christmas.
