Thread regarding Saudi Aramco layoffs

Can I get a nanny at aramco?

Told conflicting messages by AOC people, some say fine, others say it’s forbidden for expats unless you have 3 kids. Since this is a dealbreaker for me appreciate any thoughts. Seems Aramco is a bit of a shady outfit, the $$$s work for me but we need childcare.

Thanks all. I think my mind is made up. Won’t work for us! Thanks again for the candid responses.

And yes we clean up after ourselves too, we both have professional careers, earn good salaries and work full time. You sound jealous.

"Seems Aramco is a bit of a shady outfit"

And you are willing to drop everything and go halfway around the world, and be at the mercy of this "shady outfit"?

'Is there any point negotiating on this point?'

No Bob...no point at all. You have lost this battle already.
Try to get Aramco to change it stance or provide an OOP decision is near impossible,

They are not different rules. Aramco is providing relatively free housing and free medical care for you and your family. It will extend this to others under some circumstances, but very limited now.

Do yourself and your family a favor - decide to clean up after yourself and instruct kids to do the same.

Thanks for the responses! I have 2 kids and my wife will be working remotely. We currently have an au pair who does not want to come to KSA.

The money is only good if my wife maintains her current role, otherwise it’s a waste of our time.

I also don’t want to be doing a workaround getting a nanny in and out of the compound. Why does Aramco have different rules to the government? Is there any point negotiating on this point?

Can you employ and sponsor a relative to be nanny/child minder or houseboy?

Adding to my response below....my apologies for being so negative!!! I should have also given you a couple options other than the "sponsor" route.
Your wife can hire houseboys to help her around the house. They live on camp and can be a big help if your wife provides adequate supervision and direction. Also, other nannies on camp are always looking for extra money and with a little luck, you can find one through facebook (women of Dharan? which is a private Aramco expat women's only group). Maybe you can find someone to share a nanny or someone looking for a new sponsor. Aramco closed all the privately run day cares (which really su-ked for a lot of women!!!), but maybe your wife can team up with a group of other women and do a rotating daycare among yourselves (tell Aramco these are "play dates" if ever asked). BTW....they have hired a full time employee whose sole job is to shut down the small women run businesses on camp. There are also agencies who will find you a nanny....just kinda expensive and Aramco still doesn't like them living on camp. The point of my follow-up cooments is.....be creative and patient in finding solutions to your problems. If the money works for you, I wish you the best of luck. But the key to your success in Saudi will be your wife's ability to adapt. Mine started off great and quickly she fell into a frustrated hatred for the place. One last thing, have a place your wife and kids can escape to each summer. The summers in KSA are not only brutally hot (so your kids are stuck inside) but most other wives and kids leave the kingdom, so their ability to socialize will take a huge hit. Good luck to you! You will either love it or hate it. Don't let the unhappiness and constant negativity of other expats get you down. That will wear you down. Find people who are adaptive and make the most of their time there.

This is the reality....

  • Do you have 3 children? NO
  • Do both parents work? NO
  • Are you Saudi? NO

There lies your answer from Aramco once you arrive in the Kingdom.

Officially you can sponsor a nanny (from only select counties) in KSA and you will have to go through Saudi government agencies alone (Aramco most likely will not assist you and dealing with the government is a nightmare and will take monthsssss). Aramco may not issue this person an id and they certainly will not have access to Aramco medical or recreational facilities. At a minimum, you will need to sign this person in and out of the camp as a "guest" everytime you take them anywhere.

There is a black market for maids, but don't go there!!! Aramco has cracked down hard on these people.

If this is a dealbreaker for you, then walk. Do not trust ANYTHING the recruiters out of kingdom tell you!!!!

Talk with your HR representative, this question is more for Aramco expats forum, if you read prior posts, it is recommended travel first without family and you can take all pros and cons on the field. If works for you yo can prepare your family arrival, If not, you didn't expose your family for the traumatic relocation process.

My advice, nothing is the same in the kingdom, don't expect that and you will not be frustrated.

You can always sponsor a foreign individual through the government to work for you. Aramco Government Affairs will help you when dealing with the government on this.

The problem is with Aramco allowing your maid/nanny in living on camp, having an Aramco ID, and using the hospital. That is where the Aramco rule of having 3 children comes into affect.

Sponsoring out of camp workers could be a huge issue, as you are responsible for everything they do.

There is no restriction to having a nanny, most families here have them. Also there are many company approved agencies to get a nanny from.

That's a good question but one thing is for sure and that is it will become a major headache/ problem for you either bureaucratically or personally. I am not sure how that h3ll will manifest itself but it will.
