Thread regarding Highmark Health layoffs

I'm getting so tired of layoffs

This constant threat of layoffs is taking a toll on my health. I'm stressed all the time and I can't concentrate, which has made my productivity bottom out. I'm worried that this will be a self-fulfilling prophecy: worrying about losing my job is making me a bad employee which will end up in me being shown the door. It almost feels like this is part of their plan.

It was the Highmark plan all along! Lousy Provider service we were told don’t call the Providers- send 3 emails - no response then term them! And we were suppose to get our PTO (vacation) time and severance pay today and WE DID NOT! As stated before they’re a monopoly company! It’s only about control and bullying!

Yeah, I feel for all you people getting laid-off. When I first started working there in 1998, right after the PA Blue Shield and Highmark merger, it was still a great company to work for, and I was proud of it. The comradarie among the various departments and between leadership and the workers was unsurpassed! But, around late 2013, the company took a nose-dive. They brought in Dave Holmberg, Matt Ray, Omar Khawaja, Brad Carvellas, Gary Di-k and others who destroyed whatever "sense of team and belonging" there ever was. Their goal was to get rid of all the "old blood" and bring in the Thryve and the much more younger (read: woke) crowd who were big on Six Sigma and similar cr-p. No more "interaction". No more comradarie. While I can name countless people from my early days, I'd be lucky to name a THIRD of my departmental associates at the time I retired. Performance reports and job descriptions turned into a joke with all its stupid abstract "goals" that nobody could even define (read: corporate buzzword overload)! Being able to interpret job descriptions rendered transferring to a new area an impossibility. Started out in Open Systems as a UNIX/Solaris Administrator, then I moved to Audit Support, Compliance & Control.....then got su-ked into Governance, Risk & Compliance in 2014 which started my drive to just "hang with it for just FOUR MORE YEARS" (until I retire), and when October 2018 arrived, I "ran" out of the building. I (Richard Sgrignoli) was sooooo glad to get away!!! If it was that bad in October 2018, ge-z, I can't even IMAGINE what the environment must be like now!!! As I said elsewhere, look at the layoff as a BLESSING IN DISGUISE. You are OUT of there. YOU are now AHEAD!!!

Highmark was a great company and had a wonderful sense of community historically. Employees served the community we lived in. For the past 10 years when jobs started being relocated offshore, employees work under the anxiety of it only being a matter of time until it’s their job lost to India. The company doesn’t care about the employee's or the community they serve. It’s all about building wealth. Worst leadership ever in the last 10 years.

I hope I am next in the layoffs. No one knows wtf they are doing anymore. Highmark is surely going to fail and lose their Medicare star ratings as well. They deserve it.

Same. It’s depressing. You put in so many years of hard work for these jerks and they can’t even give you a warning. Everyday I wonder if this will be the day I lose my job. Then they do another layoff and expect you to not be bothered about it because they aren’t.
Then you get an email about how much they appreciate everyone’s hard work….

I was laid off last July after 20 yrs of loyal service. Sc-mbags even called me on a day off!! I have noticed that most if not all layoffs happen on a Thursday for some unknown reason. It is very stressful to try to do your job not knowing if you'll have a job tomorrow!! TBH my layoff was a positive thing for me, I was planning to retire in 2 yrs anyway so I just took it early. Got 40 weeks of pay and 10 month of Cobra for my insurance. Then I'll use my notional acct to pay for insurance for 1.5 yrs until I go on Medicare. I am happier and healthier than I have been in a long time. No more work stress!! Plus I've lost 50 lbs since July...no more stress eating!! Just hang in there and try not to worry...if it happens then you will probably find something better!! I'm a firm believer in everything happens for a reason and when one door closes another door opens!!

No one knows for sure but they seem to be going department by department. Our department was hit in January and other departments were hit in February and March. I dont want to speculate more and add to people's stress.. it su-ks but it's quite clear this is not the end.

Corporations absolutely factor in expected contrition after massive layoffs- they depend on it so they don’t have to report it. It’s disgusting. I feel the same way. Nobody in my department had any idea.
