Thread regarding Illumina Inc. layoffs

I won't shed a tear if this happens

I think folks that are undergoing a leadership change are at risk for a RIF. R&D is probably safe. There are way too many Directors here some with only 1 report. The org will be more flat going forward.

In all honesty, there is some fat in this company that needs trimming. I don't wish a layoff on anybody, but if it happens and people who barely do anything are affected, I'm okay with it.

Well, it happened. Lots and lots of people in leadership who led us to this mess still here. Not shocked to see it hit teams already struggling to keep up with the workload. Thinking about job hunting. Probably will. Stupid leadership is stupid, surprise surprise.

Hah, there are many directors and associate directors with ZERO reports who don’t product much of anything (or at worst, primarily just spend budget). Global marketing is completely disconnected from people on the ground, and there’s no end in sight to the current completely unusable structure. I hope for a reorg that at least considers how much is being spent by those who have never met a customer.

How much do you guys make in commission?

I observed few organizations have more senior directors than directors, rare to find such a setup in fair merit based org. structure.

Significant reduction in commission rates while we have reduction in sequencing reagent prices. Double whammy.

What do you mean by decrease in pay?

Large dollar territories and significant decrease in pay. They’ve saved plenty this year with the sales team, but that won’t stop them wanting more blood. Again a reminder that no company cares about the employees.

There is no fat to be trimmed on the field sales side (that was trimmed through the last few rounds of RIFs). We are all running very lean with large dollar territories. This rumor isn’t helping productivity though- I wish they would just do what they have to do and get on with it.

Really, are layoffs happening again?

The problem is is that the fat doesn’t always get trimmed. In fact the fat usually stays cause at this point they know how to make it seem like they’re doing something without doing anything. Getting laid off is based on two things: 1: if youre on a cancelled project, 2: who your manager is. It’s not performance.
