Thread regarding IBM layoffs

The latest stealth RA

Hearing about Band D and other roles being de-banded and the people in those roles being offered a band reduction or a package to leave. Also no promotions at all (even B6 to B7 for example), including low cost countries. So yay for career progression.

The upper bands know where the bodies are buried. Watch what happens with existing and new lawsuits when they are let go.

Yes, I agree, still too many high level managers in the company. Then most of them are really totally useless. AK, could easily cleaned that up and double his bonus, so what is the delay AK? I just don't get it.

You could make some broad assumptions the other way, and see what pops out
Let’s assume there are 1/2 as many execs and other bands above the C’s and D’s so approx 2000. Lets also assume there are 2x as many managers and exec’s below the C’s and D’s or 8000. That’s
8k + 4k + 2k = 14k worth of the USA head count or approx 33% are in management. Who thinks any company can survive with a management burden of 1/3

Using your numbers, you are saying there are 4000 C’s and D’s within the USA. If true, there is way too much top heaviness in IBM management and a 10% hair cut doesn’t even approach what trimming needs to happen. Meta cut 1/3 of their management staff and they are making money hand over fist. AK GET to WORK A 50% trimming is not unreasonable

Approx. 10% of D's & C's were de-banded or fired for not relocating to offices 3 days a week, this year alone ~400 execs - about time & good riddance!

Spot On comment !

IBM executives need to cut deep and hard into top heavy management organizations like F&O, Consulting etc. The mainframe era is not going to last forever and cannot sustain the faltering IBM ecosystem. Currently, there is nothing but a failing strategy in place lead by AK.

Watson senior and Jr managed IBM with a 10-1 employee to manager ratio. It’s what the US army used during WW2 and they emulated that. When Gerstner came on board IBM in the 1990’s it was down to 6-1. He promptly cut excess headcount (60k over 18 months) and moved the manager to employee ratio back to 15-1. Today IBM is running at 6.5 employees to 1 manager. Looks like it’s time for a haircut. IBM has always been over managed which results in its almost 2X overhead cost vs its nearest competitors. Being over managed when you are the only game in town is an affordable executive perk/luxury. Being over managed when you are struggling to survive is a fault of the executive team, and shouldn’t be tolerated. During hard times executives get paid big bucks to make the corporate entity efficient and focused. AK it’s time to step up, or step off. You have a head count problem that is causing inefficiency and lack of focus. GET to WORK

IBM gave out too many band D's a few years ago. Especially sales managers who were just that. Managed a small team of people. It was sales trying to catch up with consulting promotions.

Interesting that you’ve heard about promotions. I’m in the US and the band reductions have happened to people I know personally. The blanket promotion ban may just be in my BU which I’m not sharing here. Good to know it’s not IBM wide.

And you know all this great information about ages and bands because you are another Indian bozo who peddles fake news from AK's desk ?

I know several sellers who within the last month or so received band increases from 7 - 8 and 8 to 9. All excellent sellers within the age range of 25 - 45.

That said I do not doubt that IBM is cutting everywhere, and based on Arvind's last CEO call TLS is about to get hammered (again)

That's wonderful news for the fourth of July ! It means the IBM dividend is safe - at least for now. Not even NVIDIA gives you $6 per share as dividend. Besides, who really cares for the leadership f-ups in the US, India or Brazil if they lose their promotions and bonuses ? The IBM CIO is still going strong with the old white boys and old white girls networks and cronyism in the ranks. After all, this is what capitalism is all about- getting rich and getting ahead. Let's wait to see when the thieves like AK and JG start burning down the IBM buildings and facilities to collect the insurance money for the dividend.....it's been done by lots of desperate folks and it usually works. As they say, accidents happen...all the time.
