Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Question re: severance package

I have not been laid off yet, but with the amount of org changes and upper mgmt leaving in my area, I can see the writing on the wall. Can someone who has recently been impacted by a layoff let me know what the bank severance package looks like? Is it still 12 months? Do they gross it up for tax purposes (heard a rumor that they do this) or if not, is it taxed at a higher rate like a bonus is? Do they provide any medical insurance coverage at all or supplement the cobra costs? Do they provide any resume assistance or headhunter services? And if they do, did you find these helpful at all? If you get laid off, do you receive any portion of the upcoming annual bonus prorated? Are you expected to work during your notice period or do they tell you to ship back your equipment and stop working immediately?

Thank you!

While severance for bank employees is a year be very very careful though. I have heard of multiple people being accused of misconduct (total BS) and then being told because of that they do not get their severance. Of course it’s a complete lie, but somehow HR and the business are OK with it. And assume people will not fight it because now you have to go to arbitration vs suing USAA. I am surprised regulators are not seeing any of this. Maybe I need to submit a whistleblower complaint? 🤔 If it happens to you make sure to go to the local newspaper here since upper management does not seem to like being in the newspaper 😂

Bonus income is not taxed at a higher rate than base salary. It is withheld at a higher rate. Since base salary is paid evenly throughout the year, they withhold an estimate of the effective tax rate which blends all of the tax brackets. Since bonuses are a lump sum on top of that, they withhold an estimate of your marginal tax bracket.

Still 12 months pay for Bank employees, AFAIK. Resume assistance is pretty good. You won't be asked to do any USAA specific work, apart from anything urgent. You would keep the laptop until your last day. Bonus won't be paid out unless you are on the payroll the day it is paid.

One year pay. No gross up. No Cobra. No bonus. Career services are ok for resume help.

Bank will give you 1 year worth of salary. If you’re a bank affiliate, you won’t get 1 year’s.
