Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Voluntarily exiting

Looking for serious and honest opinion if one should pursue an offer in a safe company (doesn‘t fire people, cannot name), located within a couple of mins reach, better job role, great culture, but compensation will be down 40% (due to RSUs majorly).
Also if RTO is enforced in BC, I will not be able to move, several 100 miles away.

Would you stay or leave?

Given a choice of a new role away from this boring Broadcom treadmill, I'd leave for sure.

In a similar situation. Have an above market offer from a company, but still lower than BC, thank the stocks gods.

If I am let go, no guarantee that I‘d be able to get that opportunity again.

Keep it simple: if you already have AVGO RSUs, then sell them and take the cash (minus capital gains tax). All your other RSUs don't have any meaningful value because HT isn't finished right-sizing VMW. The future value of AVGO RSUs should not be included in any alternative job offer calculation.

There will be a come to Jesus moment for all the migrants who have gone overboard and bought 5 houses and haven't sold a single stock. The fear of God will be put back into you. God will your only savior. The migrants will be left deranged and will never recover. They will go back to where they came from empty handed and live anonymously.

By your model the entire world of stock price will be much lower.

Chinese cannot stop the real estate implosion. India most recent Industrial production went negative and the rupee has come under stress. Several economies in Europe like Germany and UK are in recession.

Most of the optimism for the entire world is mainly coming from the Mag 7 bubble based on what is not clear. Bubbles do go longer than anyone can predict. And the reverse is also true. Once the bubble bursts the depression goes longer than anyone can predict.

Individuals involved with the violent Venezuelan gang have been entering the United States illegally and have committed crimes across the nation.

There is going to be a major false flag event related to all the gang activity or all the other te------ts pouring into American, very early in the next Trump administration. Then the Military Industrial Complex will go haywire.

If your finances only work if the stock keeps going up, then you have a problem. Predictions say more about the predictor than what the stock is going to do in the future - Warren Buffett. The fair value of AVGO is 30 by standard valuation models. If you need the stock to be at 300 for your personal finances and over leverage and home loans and car loans and student loans to make sense then, I have news for you, and that is you are very close to bankruptcy in the near future. The stock market can stay irrational for longer than you can stay solvent. So take care. Looks like your brains are fried. Wear that tin foil hat.

Bidenomics has reached climax. Layoffs increasing. Credit card delinquencies increasing. Auto repos increasing. Government jobs increasing. Migrants jobs increasing. Inflation increasing. All restaurants going bankrupt. Fed cutting rates. Stock market all time highs. Gold off the charts. Housing bubble bursting. Those who have dreams of this bubble lasting another 20 years are just picking pennies in front of a steam roller. The economy has already rolled over a couple of years ago. Mag 7 is holding up the stock market. Who is pumping the Mag7 and for what is to be seen. Just 20 more days for the election.

I love the doomsday commentary, so informed.

“Boo hoo, I have stock in the newest member of the magnificent 7 as Bcom has replaced Tesla.” - is that your position?

If you view it as a bubble, you have an opportunity every 3 month to sell all your vested shares and invest it elsewhere.

If the number of RSUs you received is sh-t, then you’ve already been Hock’d and haven’t realized it yet.

I’m a long-time VMW veteran who spent ~6 months w BC before I decided to leave…

First, you need to base this decision on what’s most important to you: Money, or quality of life/career fulfillment. Only you can make that determination. The answer is different for everyone.

Second, there are no “safe companies”. None. Get that idea out of your head. However, there are certainly many companies with a healthier culture than BC. In my high-tech career I’ve worked for many companies, big and small, and I’ve never once worked for a company with such a dysfunctional, barren, soulless culture as BC. Hard to imagine you could go anywhere, and find worse. But that's just one person's (informed) opinion.

Third, if your new role is in Big Tech, you’re going to find most first-tier companies pay in the same ballpark when it comes to cash compensation. BC stands out because they pile on stock since, let’s face it, BC needs over-the-top incentives to attract and retain people.

(Aside: I'm currently working as a contractor, and with overtime I am bringing home more now than I would have earned if I stayed at BC and cashed in my RSUs.)

Lastly, and this is particularly relevant if you are in the early- to mid-stages of your career: How long are you willing to stay at a company that does not prioritize or invest in employee development, or provide broad opportunities for advancement? Collect those RSUs and build your bank account, but let your professional development stagnate? Think hard about the trade-off, only you can make that decision for yourself.

What's this 130 to 185 range that you cherry picking to look at.

185 is the recent all time high/resistance. 130 seems to be the recent significant support. Each of the Mag 7 are all now at their recent all time highs within the last year. Since the stock market is now within the 99th/100th percentile of PE ratio of all time, yes it can keep going up a bit more, but the downside is significant. Of course the fundamentals don't matter and the stocks will go to the moon. AI will replace all workers and coders. Whatever.

RSUs are a variable part of compensation, and should not be considered, since they can fluctuate and have little to no real value

"HT is predictable. More layoffs are inevitable at VMW."

So, stick around and wait to be terminated. Weird to be okay with that mindset. One day you wake up and realize you lost all self-respect. Yes, Broadcom's healthcare plan will pay for your depression meds. But don't you want more from life than just a pitiful existence?

You sir, should not look at stock or invest at all. What's this 130 to 185 range that you cherry picking to look at. Hock has been CEO of this company for 20 years. He has a track record of 20 years for you to look at.

it is odd you ask a question like this from strangers (some are totally ignorant), ask yourself! ONLY yourself can answer

OP here - You‘re right, but people speak more freely here about what‘s going on in their minds. I have mostly decided to leave soon anyways, money is great here, but until how long? Im getting an above average salary job, with everything better, but salary is lower comparably, thinking long term because of household responsibilities.

It was 130 just 3 weeks back. So?

Ok, so 30% increase in your fake world, I’ll happily buy from you at $130. Please let me know how. Talk about head in the sand. There is volatility but are you going to claim there isn’t an huge upward trend here?

Point being, the person who complained about paying taxes on RSUs. That is a pretty stupid complaint, indicating they don’t know much about RSUs. The tax question is moot as the stock price increase has more than covered those costs should you have been naive enough to think you just multiply number of RSU shares by share value and take that money home with you.

at the time of the acquisition, the stock price was around $100 then. Now around $170s

It was 130 just 3 weeks back. So? Entry and exits are always difficult. That is why even professionals do dollar cost averaging on both entry and exit. The quarterly vesting is a good dollar cost averaging strategy because you get your strikes entry every quarter and you can exit once a quarter. Generally the execs also do the same. They exit a few times a year.

Oligarchs don't give the plebs millions out of the goodness of their heart. Its just a scam. Understand the scam and try to protect yourself. Equity and equality is just a mirage. You are in a deception. Hard to see through. But everything will be crystal clear in due course of time. You will be wiser then. Hindsight is 20/20. Hard to see the future and analyze the present.

If you are coming from VMware and you got RSU grants at the time of the acquisition, the stock price was around $100 then. Now around $170s. Huge increase in value, clearly blowing any concerns about taxes out of the water, short term or long term cap gains.

I believe, for many people putting up with whatever stupid pet tricks are asked of you to vest is a sound financial decision - milk it as long as it last, much like Hock will milk VMware for as long as it lasts.

There is no single correct answer, but if you were lucky enough to get a generous RSU grant combined with the run up in stock price, you would miss out on a big $ upside by leaving before you are fired.

No fan of hock, just make the best of the cards you were dealt.
