Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

Teradata now finally has a CTO

Teradata finally has a CTO that is not a contractor. However the named was promoted to the role and does not actually have CTO experience. What do we think of this news?

The fact is that the CTO is merely notional in the sense that he will just fly around to a few events and conferences, meet some customers and swear black and blue that the company ain't sinking. It's not like he will have the nous to set product direction or event influence product direction

They guy only has a Bachelor's Degree. (Please don't defend that Harvard $50000 certificate), unless he's a complete genius, but doesn't look remotely close.
And contributed to the Open Source community for Joomla? you're kidding me, right? Garbage! They're really reaching.
A CTO like that just tells you this ship has sunk.

They tried to get a CTO out of one of the Google divisions, but were politely told to go away. No one in their right mind at that level would want to join a company headed for the scrap heap

I’m angry too, but LL is not the one. No one is telling his story right imo. TIO has been steadily pumping out all the fundamental building blocks of our next gen platform and if we can buy 1 more spin around the sun, you’ll see it too

TDC could not get an experienced CTO from a real cloud company so they settled for LL. Shows how bad things really are.

The timing of this is to have something to point to in the earnings call. That’s all it is. Yes, we still su-k, but we got this CTO who will turn it around with his AI vision.

Strange appointment to say the least... why LL took is clear - money and a title. Why at this point TD needs someone inexperienced as a CTO and with a baggage of being a part of TD (arguably failing) "innovation" team is totally unclear. What exactly is expected from him? How does SM make these decisions? Or is LL being prepared for a role of a scapegoat?!

It's the role you give someone when they haven't got anything else to do. Do they really think he'll be listened to by our biggest customers who are well down the pathway of migrating off.

Don't mind the guy but nothing can be fixed at this point.

He's just taking the role for the title and paycheck.

Wow, helped run Sears into the ground. Great pick, obviously the most qualified candidate in the entire world. Only the best for Teradata.

So he’s been with Teradud for ten years. What has been accomplished?

Agreed, TIO hasn't released anything significantly innovated in the past several years; many throughout the organization always wondered what they actually do. The newly-promoted CTO LL was brought over to Teradata in 2014 by former CEO OR (they were buddies from their years together both at eBay and Sears), and was mentored by absent consultant CTO SB. TD is probably promoting from within, because no one qualified from the outside would risk jumping aboard the failing ship.

I’m happy to see we are promoting within. However, the new CTO was previously Vice President of TIO since 2020. What came out of TIO in the last 4 years that turned the company around?
We’ll see; but I don’t have high hopes.
