I left VMware early on the Broadcom debacle; I knew it was a ticking time bo-b despite the sweet talk from executives. I left and I am better off but what surprises is all my VMware connections seemingly struggling to find the next place in my feed. I’m not talking 2/3 years at VMware, I’m talking Senior solution architects with 10 years at VMware struggling to find a job. VMware is or was one step down from FAANG. These guys should be poached. Am I missing something? Is VMware not really the draw I thought it was?

If you have no white hair then VMware will just ruin you. You need a lot of patience to deal with the toxicity and that patience comes only after 40. There was a PE who used to yell and scream and get onto the tables and jump and it felt like a psychiatric ward. There was no one to restrain. There was one guy who used to get his mad Indian street dog to work. It used to hysterically bark at everyone. The place is a toxic dump. A lot of it is subdued now, but those who were here for a long time know the demons that are still roaming silently. People staying late and drinking in office in the dark and God knows what happens later into the night. The place is evil. It is a sin to just sit in these buildings and breathe the air. Thanks to Broadcom we have bright lights now. I like the Walmart vibe. Better than the satanic vibe of the past.
Out since June. It’s brutal out there especially when you are in your 60’s.
I think a lot of it is because everyone wants cloud, data, AI, these days, or dev around those. Regardless of what Mr. Hock says, on-prem VMware is now legacy - which is why he bought the company to fleece all the customers that have to remain legacy.
Just take a look on LinkedIn posts - no matter what Broadcom and employees share, nobody besides other employees even comment or like. Now, go look at when any of the cloud providers post, or an AI or data company posts, it gets a lot of attention.
I believe the person making $800K TC now. That sounds about right. And the ex-Directors are making over $1M TC. That's great if you see a limited career future. But there is a good chance you will get laid off, so those extra years of market comp you will take a hit on the open market most likely. So, your lifetime earnings may be less if you get laid off within 1-2 years.
I'll pull in almost 800k this year in salary, bonus, and RSUs. Perfectly happy hanging around being a dinosaur. $$$$
Noone is struggling. Everyone around me is fine
Yeah man. VMware is a dead end job. I am here for 17 years and I cannot find another job. I would have left 10 years back if I could. Generally, if you stay 2 years then you are not employable. I still maintain dozens of JRE 1.8 in our product. There are 100s of copies of JRE. Then many python versions, and tons of versions of other open source. Its just not something that you can put in a resume for any kind of job. No one else in the industry has these kinds of jobs.
u left job but still post on layoff forum about it? get a life man..
You moved on from
VMware but why you still lurking around …. Move on !!!!!!
