4kba It’s actually closer to 30k over the last 5 years. Don’t believe it? Just look at the 5500 IRS form. 2019 = 73,105 2024 had 2 aggressive layoffs resulting in approx 10k being hit. If we take 2023 actual numbers 51,708 and subtract 10k = 41,708 so conservatively 31k I suspect it’s actually closer to 40k

@4kba

why is it that AI is unable to replace the expensive CEOs even when it is a better proposition ? Automation is a better bet than a bunch of mentally unstable CEOs and their peons.

IBM’s forced layoffs of over 20,000 U.S. workers in the past five years. The company wants to “correct seniority mix".

Translation: only keeping the best, brightest, youngest (yes under 40 yrs old) and most essential positions. For most companies that is 5-10% of staff. CEOs to make millions off AI replacing most roles.

RAs are not normally done on a Friday. Usually Thursday so that people can connect with their lawyer or mental health support on Friday

IBM SW changed their strategy approx a year ago (buy innovation and replace legacy). This strategy change is impacting IBM worldwide, but especially in first world countries as part of the “buy innovation” strategy also includes offshoring the support.

IBM Canada has been doing 3 months/12 weeks notice for RA's over the last couple of years. In Ontario the longer notice period lets them pay less severance ( the 2 weeks/yr you hear quoted is for notice+severance)

Is IBM Canada fiscal year Jan-Dec?
Ontario requires min 8 week notice. A layoff now would put separation date to January.
Did IBM Canada usually do RA in March?

In the past, every time IBM does a RA, this employment lawyer site https://stlawyers.ca/blog-news/ibm-layoffs-senior-programmers-sales-rebalancing/ would post something. I’d wait to see if this site puts up an article about ibm and advertising their business.

@jue+1vvmIOrp "if we win, you win; if we lose, you lose"

When we fight, we win?

Hmmm. that didn't work!

@gcl+1vvmIOrp ... don't hate. Especially not today. T Swift is in town for, I don't know, some number of shows. Plus, her special friend will experience the first loss of the season in about 50 hours. And here you are wishing ill on us. We ARE your best friends; if we win, you win; if we lose, you lose. "Rest of the world?" You can literally walk here.
