Long Beach struggles: The number of police officers in Long Beach will be cut back to levels not seen since 2002 under next year's proposed budget, police officials told the City Council on Tuesday. While the Police Department is currently budgeted at 1,020 officers, 54 of the positions are vacant, police administrators reported. With planned reductions and the civilianization of many desk jobs that could result in the layoff of 34 officers when the 2010 fiscal year begins Oct. 1, the total number of officers would drop to 932 sworn officers, about halfway between the 2002 and 2003 numbers, police officials said.
