Eaton plant in Shenandoah announces 71 layoffs

SHENANDOAH – The Shenandoah Eaton plant is laying off 71 workers permanently by early December.

This information was sent via registered letter to Shenandoah Mayor Dick Hunt and Shenandoah Chamber and Industry Association Executive Vice President Gregg Connell Tuesday morning.

The letter, signed by Shenandoah Eaton Plant Manager Jorge Zedillo read, “Eaton Corporation plans to eliminate its third shift manufacturing line at its facilities located at 1600 Airport Road. This shift elimination will result in the permanent termination of employment of 71 company employees.” Connell, whose job is to bring jobs to Shenandoah, said it’s difficult news to swallow. “This is obviously a difficult situation for the 71 people that are losing their jobs,” Connell said. “You know this is a situation that we obviously don’t like to have happen in our community.

“But Eaton Corporation has been an incredible company in Shenandoah. It’s been an incredible corporate citizen. We appreciate and thank them for the incredible 44 years that they have been in this community and hope we have another 44 years with the roughly 350 employees that Eaton still has.”

Eaton will offer relocation opportunities for the displaced workers and severance packages for those who choose not to go that route. The company will also assist employees with the state dislocated workers assistance program.

Jim Michels, manager of global business communications for Eaton Vehicle Group, said the layoffs are not due to any specific customer or contract.

“We always are doing reviews of our business and based on current market conditions, and we’d like to ensure that we continue to have profitable growth, we made the decision to eliminate that shift,” Michels said.

Despite the layoffs, Eaton’s three Iowa facilities – Shenandoah, Belmond and Spencer – still employ 1,100 workers.
