Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

HP Inc workers organize

Dion is no better then Meg in terms of cost cutting, when sales are down just cut jobs, benefits, offshore, etc. The only way for workers to have any say, unlike the share holders, is to organize, "UNIONIZE"!

Might not prevent the trend to layoffs, but will make it harder and more costly to the Company, so they will feel some of the pain workers they screw feel!

HP will be too small anyways and will be sold at some point so no worries there. They've been laying off / restructuring since Mark days. I lost how many thousands now. I think we are averaging on 80000 Mark 30000 and Meg 50000. People need to be unionized that is my opinion you can not be treated like worthless just because your cost is high. Anyways long store short. Run while you can !!! there is way better alternatives and this company is collapsing anyways bad processes. Costly outsourcing schemes that loses more money. Non existant support they have no idea what the client wants. When hired as long you speak english you can have a senior job. All the people that are left are bff's and they protect each other.

Even if you cut all executive compensation, it still won't be enough to really pay american workers more and move all operations back to the U.S. Are you that clueless? It's like saying if more 1-2%'ers in this country pay more taxes ,we can eliminate our country's debt. (don't even go there, because if you run the the numbers, we wouldn't even be close...)

There is something to be said about excess executive compensation, which I won't argue with you over. But you have to understand there's a reason why no company (apple included) manufactures most of their stuff in the U.S. anymore.

Motorola Mobility tried to bring back manufacturing to the US when it was acquired by Google. They spend over $8billion to open a cell phone manufacturing facility in Texas and failed miserably doing so without making a single phone. They couldn't find anyone qualified or even willing to work at the prices points they could afford to pay. Motorola was subsequently sold to Lenovo, which immediately shut down the US factory and move manufacturing to where every other cell phone company is...China. And they are profitable now. The same could be said for just about every European tech company as well.

Here's reality. HP isn't going to survive in the PC business. And it's going to fail miserably trying to get into the tablet/mobile space. The PC business will either go under (unlikely) or get sold to a Chinese PC maker that can compete on cost. HP probably will be ok if it stays in the printing business alone. Because aside from the hardware (which HP has been known to sell at cost or at a loss), they can charge an arm and leg for the supplies (ink/toner/etc). and HP still (at least now) has a pretty big marketshae in the printing business (aside from Epson)

Typical management response, American labor cost to high! If it was up to your type everyone would be paid a Dollar a day, then the shareholders will be happy. If your so concerned about profit margins then why don't you offer to take a pay cut or retire?

Look OP. Look around... HP isn't exactly doing well. HP is getting it's ass kicked in the PC business. It's in survival mode. The choice is simple. Reduce cost of making PC's so it can remain competitive with all the other asian players (and that means laying off some of you now), or shutting down the entire company when it goes belly up (and that means laying off all of you and shutting the door).

Why don't you understand that the PC business has and will continue to be in decline. Since it's a commoditized business, the only way companies know is how to compete on cost and cost alone. And most U.S. companies will NEVER be able to compete on cost alone, when it has to spend so much on american labor.
