Why I crossed the picket line.

I have been a technician for this company for 27 years and have been through numerous strikes without even thinking of crossing the line. My sons is scheduled for surgery tomorrow and I called the union last week when it looked as if we were going to lose our benefits. I was told by the person at the district office that we needed to try to change his surgery date since they weren't sure it would be covered by the union. He has been waiting 6 months for this and they want me to change it NOT. I am sorry to those coworkers that I have offended by crossing the line but I had to do what is best for my son. I have many mixed feelings on why we are even still out on strike. What a couple hundred employees will have to drive 70 miles to get to work well hell I have been driving 50 to get to work for 27 years and know many other that commute much greater distances. I see all this talk about freezing the pensions at 30 year. Hell most of us will be lucky to even get to 30. Can't everyone see the writing on the wall, they are going to sell this side off the next chance they get. Just ask your former co-workers in CA, FL and TX. I also don't see why we are fighting for workers from Verizon Wireless, are they union now and I lost the memo. They don't give a rats assabout us be we are expected to walk for them? I have yet to receive a dime from the union for any of the strikes I have been out on. Where are all those years of union dues that we pay to them go? They need to set up a GOFUNDME page? I think it is time for the union to put in a negotiator that actually has the members best interest in mind instead of trying to prove that they have a bigger cock.

When are you Union guys going to realize you have zero leverage. The 2011 strike the union made up over 60% of the workforce . Now in 2016 it makes up approx 25% in a part of the business that makes no money and will not be viable in 3 yrs. Time to wake up and realize times have changed and your dinosaurs that are going to be extinct shortly. Time to cut bait, lose your one for all attitude and either sh-- or get off the pot

I hope this strike is not specific to the copper/ landline telephone service. My wife wants to get rid of the landline as the only calls we get are from sales solicitations. Everyone we care to hear from calls our cell #. Young people don't even subscribe to landlines when they get their own apartment.

Verizon has hired a company know for union busting so don't be suprise do when you start seeing blogs or posts at different websites bashing the union. They get payed to come up with bs posts in order to cause dissension among the rank and file. Anybody who been holding down the lines knows it's way different this time around then last. The general public is behind us because everybody knows about greedy corporate America at this point. I for one would like to thank those people who have been coming to our lines with water, food ice and whatever we need. Verizon can't lie there way out of this one and everybody knows it. Even have politicians calling out the fact that Verizon doesn't pay its taxes like it should and I'm sure the longer this goes on the more dirty laundry you'll see from this corrupt greedy company

You don't know why we are on strike really.i guess you were one of the people who didnt go to there union meetings. Let me make it simple for you. All the benefits you have now they want to take back and then just declare you in a surplus and fire you so the can hire people who will get payed by the job and not worry about medical or pension or anything else. Why don't you go ask a Verizon manager how things are since they raped them if there pension ect. Living under fear of getting fired just because a bigger boss doesn't like you. Even if you were the best at your job it means nothing. They eat there own and want nothing more to be able to eat craft as well. You do not need to apologize. When you resign as I did, it is then that you find out 52% of your Union dues are "non-chargeable" That means that money essentially goes towards the Democratic PAC funds. I always knew a portion of if it did but was mortified to find out the actual amount.

These people blindly follow one of the now corrupt ideologies along with the other side. Both parties are members of the Corporatocracy Govt now entrenched in this nation. The side you pay your 52% dues is hush money.

So these pricks knowing your situation and taking it on a case by case basis would not pay the 900+ COBRA premium so your son could have a what I would assume a very expensive procedure?

They couldn't tell their PAC funds that they will not be paying any money towards those PAC funds until the strike is over? Do they actually continue to pay them?? Wouldn't you like to know?

How bout an audit you sh-- hole Union Officers?

So OP let me give you another example. I have a co worker with a life and death situation. He needs Dialysis 3 days a week.. He brought it up to them lonnnnng before the strike even occurred. Heard nothing, took a couple vacation weeks for the first 2 weeks of the strike and finally reached out to them and was flatly rejected. This would be IBEW.

So.. what the hell does that tell you? So you do what is best for YOUR son. F--- these contemptible Communist pricks.

Chew on this.. Take a look at the money they spend just towards get out the vote campaigns. So let me get this straight IBEW, the basic fundamental right as a citizen is to be able to vote and one would think that and individual would take THE responsibility to figure out how to do that on there own if they gave a sh-- and yet we have to show them as adults? You seriously blindly believe that the employee would not have comparable benefits if not for the Union. Do some research on employees and companies that have no Union. If you feel the company is Verizon b****_ quit and find a new job. It's your choice not to. Also.. You have no clue what surgery the employees son needs. You don't know if he has been on a heart transplant list for 6 months, if its for cancer or some other life threatening need for the surgery. He had his reasons for crossing, you have your reasons for not crossing. Don't judge the employee without knowing all of the facts.

Best of luck. Most of us are puzzled as to why we are out. I think its mostly because of Verizon wireless part. I will give them till end of month to get us back. At that point I'll either go back or look for other job. Tough decision.
