Worked at Grainger for over 15 years. Was there in Mettawa/Lake Forest in 1999 when they moved in the building. This was under the tenured of Wes Clark, Mr. Grainger, Jim Ryan, and others. There WAS a time when Grainger valued employees, family, and work-life-balance. The company was generous with sharing double-digit PST at all levels of the organization (janitor on up). These were the days of 100% tuition reimbursement :)

Grainger has always laid off workers in order to make adjustments to the bottom line to meet shareholder expectations. BUT, Grainger cares a great deal about image and perception so they were always careful to roll out layoffs in phases as to not capture any media attention. Grainger started to become a "different" type of company when the younger leaders started to step up and take over. Grainger hired consultants from Boston Consultant that eventually took over the company bringing several folks from the BCG with them in high level positions (VPs and above). The little men and women were gradually pushed out; moved into roles that didn't match their skillset; and long-time employees bullied out of their hard earned severance dollars when forced out. Shameful.

I hope that the executives and VPs that found displacing long-term employees to be menial are met with the same fate (but I'm sure golden parachutes will cushion their fall).

Amazon buying Grainger NOT GOING HAPPEN

Grainger has always been the high price

Customers bought from Grainger because of the secret sauce " the hard working loyal employees " who put customers first

Keyser & Ryan gradually destroyed the relationship with employees

Amazon understands this & is hiring as many former Grainger employees as they can

In 1928 Bill Grainger knew the way to be successful was to win customers thru employees Not around them . Amazon putting the customer first is old school to ex Grainger

Amazon secret sauce is just like Bill Graingers

If you want to win you need loyal dedicated employees

Hard to believe Graingers CEOs lined their pockets by screwing everyone else & the board ,Dave Grainger & Jim Slavic just watched

Grainger is the next Sears The stock will be under $100 first qtr 2018

Da. ----------Ryan told us not to worry He had a committee looking at Amazon

What happened ? Why is he & Jardin leaving dumping all their stock?

He said he felt our pain when he cut our PST .

What's going on .

He always said we were valued team members.

Why is he leaving the battlefield when we are in the middle of a fight for our lives

Please someone tell me what's going on

Grainger absolutely lays off workers. There was an inside sales office that when everybody came in the Monday after New Year's, HR was waiting for them. It was just a messed up situation from what I heard. I worked for Grainger... and literally everybody I met from the District Manager level and above were complete and total d-bags. It was really bizarre. Keep in mind this was during the times of the stock climbing higher and Grainger still offered profit sharing... Every one of those bozos acted like they were the CEO. Now many of them have been fired as well. The old ways of how Grainger operated are over. It's been just weird to watch. The ship hasn't sunk yet, but it's taking on water.

Agree with all of the above except that Grainger never Lays Off. They do. So many tenured and talented people are gone from high level management to the local pee on. Grainger is heading down the path of Radio Shack ad Sears. I hope I'm wrong! 12 Year veteran and not sure I will be able to make it to retirement with-out going on welfare first.

A $3 billion loss in market cap. Flat sales. A market share that is the same as it was 11 years ago, when I began my Grainger career. A vendor optimization program that left our customers running to competitors. Zoro orders shipping in Grainger boxes. Zoro, period. A muddy, complicated price reduction initiative that still makes Grainger the most expensive player in the segment. Nothing to do with Amazon, all Grainger. Far from stubbing our collective toe, we've been walking off of cliffs for the last two years. Time for the D.G experiment to come to an end - sad that it won't happen.

Secret plan...the execs aren't smart enough to come up with one!! Maybe their plan was to let Deb O Take over sales knowing she'll do nothing but add to the already declining sales and morale. Maybe it's her who is the "source of all evil" who "adds nothing to the bottom line" . Seriously pathetic, the company is a joke...employees know it, just as the customers do.

Funny, I keep wondering when Amazon will finally EAT Grainger and leverage what little mRO expertise they still have. I might be a little sour after working there 12 years being constantly told "no" for promotion because I didn't fit in with the folks in the crystal palace in Lake Forest. The whole point of working in a large organization is prospect of movement and promotion for doing a great job, correct? Well, after my department was outsourced to Panama of course I wasn't one of the lucky 50% or so they kept, only to next day air me a new job proposal two months later when they realized oh crap this isn't working. At least I got a good severance. Ha! They even had me sign a non compete for Amazon. Burn baby burn....

I think Grainger should hire people that thinks their s%*t doesn't stink. Because you know what, it does stink. It stink like s#@T.

I truly believe, the long-term trend of this company is doomed. The stock buy backs, cutting PST, "retail" in general slowly dying. I'm guessing at some point, this company will be taken private (after enough money is spent to reduce shares outstanding & reducing other "expenses"). Grainger operates like it's a Utility, BUT it's not. It's getting slammed on all sides competitively and they're looking for a way to get out.

OR, pull a move from the other Execs that got canned: Start your very own consulting business!!!! Because they did SUCH a GREAT job at Grainger, they got fired. But put their "expertise" in your company's hands!

I bet the Secret short term plan looks like -- keep stock price up with buybacks -- keep dumping stock -- keep getting bigger bonuses -- outsource & downsize -reduce benefits -- keep BS ing. the Board & analyst - -Go big celebrate BS accomplishments -at annual mtg --- plan next strategy session at top. PGA golf course -- polish resume -- get word out to best C- level head hunters -- you are ready to move
