Thread regarding Liberty Mutual layoffs

Pray you don't get sick or pregnant, because you'll be gone

Liberty has found a loophole on how to get rid of people that would otherwise be protected by law: impossible metrics.

If you have missed your metrics ONCE (which is pretty much impossible not to have done considering how unreasonable they are) and you are need a surgery or are about to have a child, you can consider yourself gone. Job performance warning process will be rushed through even if you are among the better employees and you'll find yourself on the outside.

It's a despicable practice, but it works for the soulless higher ups.

And if you are thinking I'll just make sure i never miss my metrics, good luck with that. Performance metrics change every quarter and new ones are added all the time out of the blue. They simply double or even triple the average, and tell everybody that if they can't make them, they should find a new job.

I just haven't figured out if the top management is clueless on how things work or are simply plain evil. Probably a little of both.

Uhm, I’m pretty sure these stories are either false, hyperbole, or there are other reasons for someone being separated. If anyone was let go or pushed out for a medical condition under the pretext of metrics, Liberty would be looking at lawsuits for FMLA/ADA interference or retaliation or outright discrimination. TRUST ME. The company has been known to offer or be ordered to pay large settlements to make these things go away. Still, I respect the company and it’s efforts to be accommodating to fellow coworkers and there is no hostile environment. Of course, with all due respect, you may very well be aware or have seen something completely different so Im not trying to say these practices didn’t happen, just sharing the view from where I sit.

I can confirm that this poster is absolutely correct. I was a senior manager in a claims office and I was directed by my manager to get rid of 2 specific team managers and 2 adjusters because they weren’t right for their jobs. I refused as metrics didn’t warrant putting any of these individuals on performance plans. I even called HR with the information I had as far as metrics and they agreed a performance plan wasn’t warranted. Know what happened? I was put in a performance plan with impossible metrics to meet in 60 days. When I met all but one of these metrics, I was put on a 30 day probation and more metrics were added. I was terminated at the end of 30 days even after I met all but 1 of the metrics. LM is a horrible company, with a toxic environment run by a bunch of white 30 something men who all belong to the “old boys club”.

Honestly not sure what you people are talking about. I was out for almost a year with my second daughter and had a job to come back to without a pressure from anyone at the company.

So true... Lost an amazing employee in our department after she said she was pregnant... I was shocked at what transpired within a month of her announcement... Still miss her... Do not get me started on who they got to replace her... Takes a special kind of idiot to make that kind of a trade off...
