Thread regarding Liberty Mutual layoffs

For those who doubt awful LM practices

I was a senior manager in a claims office and I was directed by my manager to get rid of 2 specific team managers and 2 adjusters because they weren’t right for their jobs. I refused as metrics didn’t warrant putting any of these individuals on performance plans. I even called HR with the information I had as far as metrics and they agreed a performance plan wasn’t warranted. Know what happened? I was put in a performance plan with impossible metrics to meet in 60 days. When I met all but one of these metrics, I was put on a 30 day probation and more metrics were added. I was terminated at the end of 30 days even after I met all but 1 of the metrics. LM is a horrible company, with a toxic environment run by a bunch of white 30 something men who all belong to the “old boys club”.

Whoever that straight up person is, when we all act like monkeys that's what allows these kinds of unethical businesses practices. I'd imagine you'd be singing a different tune if you were the one meeting all your metrics and then were fired for no apparent reason. Going along with unethical behavior only serves to further enable it, and for people like you, its all fun and dandy until it's your turn. Also, to whomever started this, I would seek legal advice for wrongful termination. It seems like if these metrics are indeed a retaliatory response to reporting your boss to HR, you could have case.

You did the right thing. Character and ethics is always best. Sorry you lost your job. I worked for another major insurer and check back to lay-off.com from time to time to see what is happening as they are going through massive layoffs of over 5,000 folks but have been doing it piece meal and staying under the radar in the press somehow. I too asked questions and found myself a target. I was terminated after 30 years of service a few years short of retirement. I am still vested in my pension but lost $100,000s in wages and benefits. But, after a year I am so glad to be out of the toxic environment of people without spines, without character or ethics, who set impossible metrics, mismanage staff and pit employees against each other, as well as treating people like robots. All very very dehumanizing. I am finally recovering from what I allowed them to do to me for several years. There are healthy employers and work places out there. Today I decided to look at what other insurance carrier’s lay-off sites had in their posts and came across yours. Thank you for sharing. PS if you are going to work for another insurance company I’d be wary of State Farm right now. Good luck.

Personally speaking, you were being paid to do a job and your manager gave you a direct order, which you went behind his back and escaladed to HR, what did you think would happen, lol! That was your own dn stupidity! Why does it matter? Just do what your told and act like their monkey!
