Sixty employees of Omnicare SoCal were laid off last week and the general manager was let go.
Shortly after the purchase of another SoCal pharmacy, ModernHEALTH LTC, last year client nursing homes sought out other long-term pharmacy providers because Omnicare was unable to provide prescription medications to thousands of nursing home patients. Former clients of ModernHEALTH who were unwillingly transferred to Omnicare as a result of the acquisition report that Omnicare pharmacy even stopped answering the phone; with employees told customers that they were "too busy" to answer the phone. Omnicare corporate sent several marketing reps from all over the country to try to mollify dissatisfied customers. Customers rejected the marketing ploy while demanding: "I just need medications for my patients, not SWAG!"
Several patients in nursing homes were unable to obtain important and even life-saving medications because of the service lapse during the acquisition period. California state Department of Public Health was aware of the situation and cited several nursing homes for failure to provide necessary care to their patients. Some of these citations were the most serious type of citations that the Department of Public Health could give.
Ask any remaining customer of Omnicare SoCal what they think of the service that they receive. Virtually all Omnicare SoCal clients are unwillingly tied to Omnicare through nationwide pharmacy services contracts.
