Savings: Shut down the Mini-Mosque & Gym At GlobalFoundries

Since GlobalFoundries Malta has shed over 500 jobs since July, I propose to save further jobs, they shut down the little-know and very expensive Mini-Mosque and Gym on the first floors! Muslims can spread a rug anywhere and flunks can certainly afford a gym membership off-site. Why should a company laying off workers keep such costly and unnecessary amenities! By the way, Christians and Jews have NO full-time designated room to “pray” during the day. This mini-Mosque requires cleaning if sinks and rugs with security tours. Think about it....

Talking about savings there is futile on all fronts. The site is mismanaged on a massive scale. You might save 100k on closing the gym only to blow another billion on the next 'pivot'. I got laid off in August and already started another job for more money at a company thats in the black. Pulling double pay for another 5 months. Job market is great right now, no reason to be depressed about your job at all. Best accidential career move I ever made. Good luck, hope things work out. Would love to see them turn it around.

The rooms are called "meditation rooms" and are basically repurposed conference rooms. They are non-denominational but are predominantly used by the Muslim community. I know of a couple of people that use them for meditation (buddhists) and I know of a manager (who is still there BTW) who used it for napping (pretending to meditate I guess). The company wastes so much money on other things like "Unconscious Bias" training (mostly targeted to people who are no longer at the company), sponsoring runs/cleanups/etc, STEM things, sending people to non-technical conferences (you figure it out), etc. How many people from HR lost their jobs? That's the biggest waste at that place, I guess need them around for all the exit interviews. If you think closing down a couple of meditation rooms and a gym would save a few jobs, that would only be temporary because it would be a clear sign of a company in trouble. Would your husband have been among the 1 or 2% that would have been saved from the small cost savings for those things? Odds say - "No".

My wife lost her job there, I was looking at losing mine too, so I left. We came from away and are moving away and have to sell a house in a market that hasn't moved in years so realtor fees will eat up ANY appreciation if that has even happened in 4 years. Yeah, it's disruptive and IT S---S, but the Glotanic is heading for the iceberg and only the managers are setup with their "lifeyachts". Abandon ship! Abandon ship!

The prayer rooms don't bother me at all. It's a small gesture of appreciation to investors who literally spent billions of dollars on this company.

Also, I knew at least 3 people who observe Ramadan with extra prayers and everything. These rooms improve their lives quite a bit

The meditation room, and fitness center had nothing to do with your husbands exit here. Goodluck in the job hunt. Always have a backup plan.

If it meant my husband would still have a job, I think a mosque or gym or anything else could have been sacrificed before our livelihood and life. We moved our entire life here uprooting all we had elsewhere in promises that were never kept. Most don’t understand the stress and grief this puts on a family. We’ll be ok but others are having a hard time. Please don’t underestimate it forget that... Thank you...

You really that "person" was being serious? You guys are id--ts for even responding to "it" - that's exactly what "it" wants. This is likely the same troll that posted the stuff about the janitors. Likely a person that was laid off from GF has a lot of time to kill while still getting paid and you people are taking the bait.

I think this post is crossing the line of what this site defines as acceptable posting content. The OP is certainly entitled to her or his opinion however this whole thread is going to evolve into a back and forth on a religious basis and that's not productive or related to layoffs. Also, calling for closing a religious facility may be considered cyber-bullying as well.

Being an atheist I have no horse in this race, I am just stating the obvious - do not waste time on this thread as it's will (almost certainly) be removed and posters blocked (hence me posting via TOR).

Yikes what a disgusting comment. A better savings strategy would be to fire useless human garbage like yourself and retain the people that want to be here. The entire company will be better off. Are YOU one of the people called out in an earlier post that can't seem to pee in the urinal or manage to put your TP in the toilet? I would gladly replace you with a janitor.

If you don’t want to be here, leave. Sad how you hide behind an anonymous title and speak this way, what an awful person you must be.
