Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Big Layoff Coming Q1FY19

breaking news....AT&T to layoff 15% of North American workforce.

Actual numbers will be close to Verizon numbers recently announced.

The writing is on the wall folks. Sales are way down, costs are way up and stock price is in the toilet.

If you are not a high performing CONTRIBUTING employee you will be on the chopping block.

BOD has mandated cost saving to get stock price above $40. Do the math.

The day of reckoning is upon us.

It is a lie that if you are a high performing CONTRIBUTING employee you will not be cut. I was one of the highest performers in my group and I was cut. I was let go for personal reasons. I was let go for being on disability for 8 weeks. The truth will come out sooner or later and in the end the ones who did wrong will get there's. The Good Lord works in mysterious ways.

I was let go as level 2. Thought my life would end with AT&T. Always wanted to work for Tier 1 provider. My manager and 2nd line was one the call. They said cause live In i Kentucky I was let go. I work from home for 15 years. Always got extra bonus for the past 4 years. Tooke care of 24person team as team leader while my manager was MIA. Did more tickets than over 25%. Metrics right? Cause I live in Kentucky they laid me off. I get it you would for work for AT&T. Hell wish I was still there however working for a company that does not value job performance. Get out if you can. Always work harder than my counter parts. My old team still does nothing.. Got offer after 6 days looking. Bingo. Made more money this year than every working for that does not value hard work.

I was treated well. For more than 15 years I was paid more than $200,000 per year for a relatively easy job in IT (Architecture & Engineering) and I worked from home then entire time except for CP training.

They completely paid for my master's degree and when I was surplused my package was almost $120,000 and I still kept the job for six months and did not really have to do much during that time.
When the job finally ended I took a six week vacation and then started a new job that is also a work from home and is an even better job.
Do not be anxious about the surplus.
There is life after at&t and you WILL be ok.

ATO 1Q2019 layoffs for US based employees "only", locations like Brno, Czech Republic, Havant, England and Singapore Call Centers are hiring in droves and safe from these surpluses, all while the AT&T death star promises incredible broadband investments/upgrades, new jobs, and new innovations takes and capitalizing on an estimated $20 billion in tax cuts under the current administration.

Rumored, the first six months of 2018, AT&T reported nearly $10 billion in profit as the company finalized the $85 billion merger with Time Warner. AT&T has spent $16.45 billion in stock buybacks since 2013, including $419 million in the second quarter of 2018, allegedly the most its spent on buybacks since 2014. All while Randall promised to create those 7,000 “hard hat jobs that make $70,000 to $80,000 per year” with the $1billion investment in anticipation of the tax cuts.

@1qlgu - The management severance package is posted for all to see through HR one stop. 13+ years = 50 % salary. Subtract 4% for every year less than that.

"If you are not a high performing CONTRIBUTING employee you will be on the chopping block."

This has nothing to do with if you are a high performing contributing employee; it's all about demographics. If you are not in a collaboration zone, you are on the chopping block. If you are in a satellite zone, you might be saved. If you are in neither, you are getting the boot. Simple as that. Performance has nothing to do with it.

I will also be shocked if there is a severance of 20 years = 60 weeks, 30 years = 100 weeks, etc. That is a lot of money to shell out to get rid of 15% of the work force. Everyone will be lucky to get 6 months pay.

Post ID: @1qlgu+VS6jbWP

ok I stand corrected, there are a lot of non union employees and you are right managers , contractors and non union will go first. then Prem techs, Direct TV and inside telecom workers outside of metro areas will go next. they moved all the telco support like GNAC and RCMAC etc to states with low wages and right work or should I say right to be laid off. the contract in the west for field services has some protection for low seniority employees, more than 15% of workers are waiting for a severance package and its pretty good. 30 years gets you 100 weeks pay. the problem is some couldnt wait and have retired already. this leaves a small workforce for “one tech does everything plan” they made all I and R techs Splicers and they may not see a package , special services will never see one. the work load is terrible for everyone

OP here....

well I have unconfirmed confirmation that 1/28 is the announcement day. Fairly reliable sources however not 100%...more like 75%.

I guess we'll know soon enough.

@1lnve - “first of all there are very few non union employees“ ...? There are plenty of non union employees. 1st and 2nd level managers (and some 3rd) are anticipating a big hit this round on the 28th.

by
|
Post ID: @1levb+VS6jbWP

regarding high performing, contributing employees having a better chance of keeping their jobs, that might be true among managers orvnon union employees, but otherwise it’s determined by seniority. there are still a lot of older employees that will take a severance package to save a younger worker

by
|
Post ID: @1ljkk+VS6jbWP

first of all there are very few non union employees, second, if T waits for all the fiber to be placed first , then cable splicers and contractors will all have jobs forever, third , there are more than enough older techs waiting for a severance package, the only way out of that for T is wait them out. The bad news is some people cant wait any longer and if the plan is for one tech to do everything then prem techs will be gone and splicers wont be able to retire. and no severance , thats messed up😩

I tried to tell you people that if you pray, all things will work out. I mean, I put it in red after all. So, if you get surplused and your life is ruined, you just didn't pray hard enough.

Former employee and victim of gov't tax incentive, receive $1000 bonus one month 60 day walking papers the next. Gotta love corporate Greed in Merica . Luckily my severance plan and pension cash out paid for the Lake house. If you still work for the death star be very afraid . Time for exit strategy

People...we are the power above the union and at&t want to hit them where it hurts hit their wallets. At&t has employed over 270,210 in their work course if every one sold their at&t stock at one time on the same day it would wake up a sleeping giant and realise they need us at least our money

OP here....

sorry about the bad news....but not unexpected. Fortunately the folks here in the ivory tower are not as discrete as they should be in their "secure" environments.

Please know there are still many good people still here that are appalled at the greed and stupidity.

Unfortunately there will be many innocent victims before the shareholders and our government intervene as they should.

Good luck and remember Jesus is still "The Real Boss"

"ATO 30%. Non-union employees: full-time teleworkers will be let go first, followed by anyone not working in an office in one of 7 designated metro areas."

Who told you that Full time teleworkers will be let go first? LOL. I love how people spread rumors on this board without having true facts.

I think you should continue to buy stock. Sell your car, skip lunch and stop sending money to the Nigerian banker. Go upstairs now and borrow money from your Mom.

Layoff’s are necessary! They have too many middle managers in IT. The more layoffs the more solid the company. Keep cutting. I will keep buying stock.

Post ID: @12chk+VS6jbWP

ATO 30%. Non-union employees: full-time teleworkers will be let go first, followed by anyone not working in an office in one of 7 designated metro areas. HR pulled the lists already and supervisors have no recourse. Doesn’t matter how many excellent performance reviews, what you’re working on, how much paid-for-by-the-company education you have.

Getting rid of IT people based solely on location is NOT going to fix how poorly ATO is run.

We were told that because Southeast didn’t get all the takers on their upfront SSIP offer in June that they will still be cutting techs. Supposedly, they held off 4th quarter due to the hurricanes. Be ready for big cuts coming as soon as outside techs finish running all the fiber needed for their new plan. Ultimately, they are planning on going with the “one tech” concept like other companies. I have been through multiple surpluses and it gets scarier each time. We are all just a number. Don’t kill yourselves for this company. If you dropped dead today they would delete you from webphone and move on.

We've had a about 3 layoffs so far this year, and a 6 month incentive offer here my division at AT&T Labs. Each layoff was about 10%. Jan. 2019 supposed to be 15% workforce reduction, and also major budgetary cuts coming as well. I was told these cuts will be ongoing, to get used to it.

The badges are worthless, it just shows you how incompetent upper management is if they think it is a worthwhile metric to determine someone's future. Of course it does not surprise me they think that way since they have no idea about some of the talent being let go or how they do not realize how worthless off shore resources are.

by
|
Post ID: @5byi+VS6jbWP

Guys don’t listen to the fake news. Keep getting your badges. Upper management definitely looks at your badges when making decisions.

I wonder how much money was wasted on the stinkin badge program. Not to mention hours spent by employees getting them.

by
|
Post ID: @5nyu+VS6jbWP

FYI:

I good friend of mine wasted 20 hours of his own time staying over to earn his "badges" After he was surplussed, he applied at Verizon, they told him not to list those "worthless" badges on his Resume. He

removed the badges and was hired by Frontier Communications.

@VS6jbWP-1qbe, All about lying, project dates always on target, regardless, FYI, our Engineering manager had a close door meeting and advised that 3 projects needed to be completed by the end of November, when in reality it required, millions in infrastrure investment to make them work in florida Alone. plus another year in operation deployment, That is how management works!! In a spreadsheet everything can be completed really fast, plus get your bonus and promotion and let the ruse continue....

Post ID: @3bqz+VS6jbWP

OP is correct, layoffs will be huge. Management is receiving offers that in my opinion is worth accepting seeing as there may not be an better offer in the near future. I spoke to my wife and we have agreed that I need to accept the offer. Best of luck to you all. In my opinion AT&T will shutter most of the American centers, move everything overseas.
