Thread regarding Cabela's Inc. layoffs

Over/Under 3 years and belers will be no more?

More bad news for Sidney.

Bass Pro Shops said Thursday that it plans to shutter the Cabela's distribution center in the western Nebraska city in the next couple of months.

"This action is being taken as a result of an extensive review of all Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s operations, including independent analysis by global logistics experts and shipping companies," the company said in a statement.

It said the analysis showed that the 77-year-old Sidney facility handled less volume than all of its other distribution centers.

Bass Pro said it is restructuring its distribution network to provide faster shipping and better compete with e-commerce companies such as Amazon. The move also will result in the closure of a merchandise return center in Oshkosh, which is about 40 miles northeast of Sidney.

Closing the Sidney center will result in the loss of 121 jobs, while 41 jobs will be eliminated at the Oshkosh facility.

Bass Pro said employees will be given the opportunity to apply for other jobs within the company or receive severance and employment assistance.

The job cuts are the latest in Sidney since Bass Pro's $5 billion purchase of Cabela's in September 2017. Several hundred positions already have been eliminated in the city, where Cabela's once employed about 2,000 people.

Capital One, which took over Cabela's credit card operations in Lincoln, also eliminated more than 150 jobs.

Bass Pro said in its statement that it remains committed to keeping a presence in Sidney

"The company greatly respects Cabela’s long-term ties to Sidney. Over the last year, every effort has been made to maintain significant operations in the city and across Nebraska while maintaining an obligation to customers and employees," the statement said.

Nice article , it was 4 Billion not 5, even though it was only valued at 2.5 Billion . They are already looking at stores that are under performing so it wont be long before we see more closures. Maybe if Bass Pro would have cut out all the Management they brought over from Corp that ran the company into the ground in the first place. They could have saved another Billion in cost and kept the Distro Center open.

This but with an added word:

Well, anyone who thought that wasn’t going to happen certainly was extremely naive....

Guessing it’s just a matter of time before Sidney Retail is gone also. Even before BP took over the new Denver area stores had canabalized sales in Sidney.

I'm a customer...I do NOT live anywhere close to Nebraska...but have been following the demise of one of my favorite retailers closely for a few years (and watching this board every now and then).

I'm sure that one thing leading to this decision is the fact that sales have drastically slumped since Bass Pro acquired the rights to Cablea's. Go into ANY store and look at the selection. Most, if not all, items have been replaced with lower quality Bass Pro branded items. If you are able to find a Cabela's item, it's probably a clearance item.

Cabela's had a strong customer following which has been alienated. Many will never return to the new company as it now stands. The last sentence, "...while maintaining an obligation to customers" is somewhat of a joke. It must be. How can you claim that, while at the same time, destroying a trusted brand, eliminating product and raising prices? Customers are not stupid; I'm not stupid. They claim, "restructuring its distribution network to ... better compete with e-commerce companies such as Amazon." That is a pipe dream; they will never compete with Amazon since most products are available on Amazon at substantially lower prices AND free shipping...All except the Bass Pro brands. Cabela's stores have become just another outlet for Bass Pro to push their branded merchandise. No one in their right mind would ever go the Bass Pro or Cabela's to buy name brand stuff; its too over priced.

I don't know how you can purchase a company for over 5 billion dollars and then COMPLETELY ignore it's source of income (the customer). I expect many more announcements like this in the following months and years as the company tries to compensate for their bad decisions.

So... theyre going to 'shutter' a distribution center that they've already devastated with terminations but are 'committed to keeping a presence in Sidney' . Perhaps Sidney would like you to just go away completely instead of stringing more people along for a few more years..? Corporate America at its finest.. pathetic.
