Thread regarding Nokia Corp. layoffs

Cleaning up the management mess

This is my opinion only - Management screws up time and time again. And we are left to clean up their mess by giving up our weekends and late evening with family while the higher ups get their big fat bonus check and a salary increase. I couldn't believe when I heard the higher up say - please tell your family members you're going to be busy this year working on 5G. Well, they screwed up big time and now they want us to clean up their mess. I don't need the scare tactics, guilt, pressure, or stress. If the company can't hire the right management team to make the right decisions (especially Finland management thinking they know it all and don't even want to bother listening to ALU management who have years of experience with USA customers) then the company should fail. The only reason Nokia is able to survive in the USA market is because Huawei and ZTE are banned and Samsung didn't have a big 4G presence

. But if Verizon and ATT select Samsung as their number two vendor (assuming Ericsson as number one since they have a much better product - just look at the trial results), Nokia is going to be in a bad shape. All those smiles on the executives faces will turn into frowns. They cut so many talented US employees and wireless management that they are now frantically looking for people to work on 5G. Just look at all the job postings they have for 5G in Poland, India, China. This is my opinion only.

I can tell you that where I work, the mgrs. do care, or most of them. The higher up you go in mgmt. the more scared they are of the mgmt. level above them but they do appreciate the employees. The older ALU and Cascade mgmt. is better. The legacy Lucent mgmt. can go either way. The US engineers are far superior in many ways for the most part. There are other engineers in other regions that are also sharp but the ratio is not as high as in the US. Our division when we were ALU made 48% of the company's profit and now Nokia seems to not be able to have positive cash flow. I don't know where the money is going but it is like a ruptured intestine and bodily fluids leaking into the body, inducing sepsis. They have done a good job in some areas of cost savings like closing some buildings and other areas but the constant layoffs to offset the continued losses will not solve the problem overall, it is like putting bandaid on an arterial bleed. They have to fix the root cause and the positive cash flow then and only then can begin. By constantly laying off good engineers, esp in :high cost center" US and some other areas outside the US only hurts the company as they cannot recover with mediocre employees and very talented employees leave to go some other company when they see openings and u are left with essentially some excellent employees and the bottom of the barrel. As far as 5G, someone above said Ericcson is a better product and they are correct and I see a mixture and Nokia currently but that could soon change to go towards more Ericcson equipment but for some markets they are all Nokia and some are all Ericcson, but like said before, if we do not do well in 5G, we will be in bad shape. In regards to India support, there are some very good engineers that I work with but that only constitutes 1/3 and the other 2/3 could disappear and it would not matter, as they are mediocre at best, but oh yes they are cheaper and saves the company money so upper mgmt. can get these outrageous compensation packages and even raises. Hell, I have gotten only 2 raises since 2006 and it is a shame. If the CEO can get a 5% raise last year, everyone should be eligible for raises, especially talented employees. Other countries outside the US, by law are required to get cost of living raises, i.e. China, Canada, but not US. Why you think some companies are bringing manufacturing jobs back to US? the products may cost more but are more durable and not some no-name television you can buy at Walmart for $100 and it dies in 1 1/2 yrs. Look at LL Bean, all their manufacturing is in the US and stuff is well made. Why can't we do the same? Cards failing and having to replace them costs money and if they were made better like when we had manufacturing in the US many years ago we wold be saving money. Maybe we should change our name to Nokia-Mart

I was in Alcatel-Lucent and then Nokia engineer. I decided to leave before the tsunami of layoffs of US ex ALU engineers and the few managers left. In my opinion, the ALU management was very poor and scared for their own jobs, in a very American way. USA ALU management did not care, but their own jobs, and sacrificed the engineers they were managing. I have many examples of VPs, Directors and Tech manager that stink in ALU USA, and they were able to leave and get attractive severance packages, abandoning the employees. Then the Finish from Nokia. They are arrogant and stupid. They should go under big time. I am just waiting for the good news that Nokia is Ch 11. I hope it happens because they deserve it. Big mo--ns. Spent $7B to buy ALU and they are not succeeding in the US market. They hate american engineers and they are very bias toward european engineers, while they are mediocre to say the least. I do not even want to talk about low cost centers. If the market is fair, Verizon and AT&T should go with Samsung and screw nokia. nokia is expensive and poor quality, does not like the US customers and bad at services.

I remember when they made systems engineers go to the cell site where the technician was installing upgrades over night to watch what they were doing. We would spend all night watching them. Then they made us rotate cell phone 24/7 for Change Request coverage. After doing all that work over the weekends, evenings, and nights with no extra pay but our constant salary with no raise for years, they got rid of the entire department in USA. After we fixed most of the code bugs, they shipped the work to China and Poland.

USA needs to have better labor laws for management salary earners. Otherwise companies will continue to abuse management salary earners in USA as they have been doing and as they continue to do so.

thanks for your opinions. on the mark.

management is the best. is not using a team built for innovation and trying to make them a cost leader a super business idea?

all of these people should be fired. rouanne was a good start.
