Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Malta

Some Malta employees are going to get transitioned to a contractor, sort of like Fishkill did with Manpower years ago. It fixes Global's employment costs for the length of the contract, unless the add or cut people. It's the cutting people that will be easier with the contractor and that is what they are looking to do. Not sure who exactly is targeted, but techs, from what I heard. No specifics beyond that.

One thing in my past message, TC was head of Ausra Solar that was bought out by Areva after being a massive bust. Interesting that he would pick a name for the ASICs group that is the exact reversal of the company that bought out his last failure. That is some kind of sociopath.

Well, McClane, you are showing your true stripes again. Simon says "Liar, liar, pants on fire." TC never said "no more layoffs" after the June purge. He even indicated in his post-mortem message that he was still evaluating the direction of the company that he "inherited". RonS is the one who said "no more layoffs" and that was in July after word was spreading around Malta that there was going to be another round of layoffs because IBM always did them in three's. You know how I know that, I was there and lived it. Maybe you are just going on what you overheard while refilling the towel dispensers in the restroom but I think not, I think you know the truth. You just cannot get over your GFDS.

Look, I am no fan of Tannin' Tom, I think the guy is so shady that he has to spend 2x more time in the tanning booth than most folks. As someone mentioned on this board before, look into TC's past dealings with Dr Nano from his work with Novellus at CNSE and his involvement in the 2 fabs in Buffalo and Syracuse when he was with Areva (and those are the things Dr Nano got busted for.) Makes you wonder if it was just a coincidence that the Dr Nano corruption news broke just as the groundbreaking was happening for the huge fab in Utica that the state was going to build for a Euro semi company. It would have put tremendous pressure on semi wages in the "tech valley" if there was actual competition to GF but AMS backed out because of the corruption indictments. So maybe TC was playing a little Michael Cohen with the NY DA's office.

So my point is still valid, TC has a better track record than you and it is very sad. I will give you that you are on par with Ron S.

Well, it's been going on for years. Have you heard of Westerwood Global?

Wrong again, Simon.

TC promises "no more layoffs, we're done..." after 1st wave in June, and massive 2nd wave came in August.

The only plan he has is to keep himself and IBM reigning tribe on payroll whatever it takes. It won't last forever.

Wrong again, Charlie Brown. I am a GenXer not a CryBaby Boomer like you or a boring millennial lemming. It's funny but it looks like Tanning Booth Tom has a better track record than the rest of you bozos. You have no evidence there is any plan to convert the techs over to an employment agency. You are either stupid or dishonest, comparing operators at an old IBM fab line that was shutting down is a lot different than technicians at a fab like Malta. From what I hear, the company is doing a lot more to engage the techs and KEEP THEM long term at Fab 8. When the layoffs happened in August, Lyin' Tom said "no more layoffs" and there haven't been any. In the next TH ( which is shortly after I left), he said they were "realigning the company's fab footprint" and that's what happened. And it is probably true that they are done selling fabs.

You guys have posted I don't know how many "confirmed" rumours of layoffs, fab closings, company sales, dead business, whatever. None of it has come to pass. How's it feel to be an even BIGGER liar than the Chief Excuse Officer?? Why do you waste so much of your energy on hoping the company will fail without you? The world is not waiting for you.

See the flash a mountain turns to ash, recollection, echoes of the past; right to left, power's what you get and the powersurge isn't over yet

Mubadala: What is this? Where'd all the money go!?!

TC: That's as good as money sir. Those are IOUs. Go ahead and add it up, every cents accounted for. Look, see this, that's an EUV scanner, 100 mil, might wanna hold on to that one.

Wow, somebody had their feeling hurt. 3 or 4 messages in retort?

That was for Simon, by the way. This is exactly how IBM operated Fishkill. But he's young, and apparently knows everything. Those of us who saw Fishkill go from a spectacular promise to a wasted opportunity under IBM have seen this before. IBM management cannot execute. They cannot manage a profitable semiconductor fab. GF management is the problem, along with Mubudala naivete. They should dump the former IBM clowns, but I think the damage is done.

Yeah, at Fishkill the operators were through a company called Manpower. Not sure if the company changed names or something, but that's who they were with for a long time. Maybe stop being atypical Millennial and listen to older people. You might actually learn something one day.

Excuse me Manpower, what is your Technician De Jour?

It's a Technician for today.

MMmmmm….he sounds experienced. We'll hire him.

This was what they did at Fishkill. The process guys were Manpower. It let IBM increase and decrease staff as needed, although I can't remember that they did much workforce adjusting except for resource actions. It's probably just a way to save money by transferring people to a new employer where they will get pay and especially benefit cuts.

OK, so what does that have to do with the original post? Hiring a couple of outside consultants on high-level business decisions is a whole lot different than the OP implying that all the techs were going to be shifted over to Manpower or some other employment agency.

GF just contracted another consulting firm to help it through "phase 2" of the pivot.

from ee times article:

"D&D Consulting is assigning their top advisors to the GF contract. Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunn will be working with GF leadership to guide the evolving company through the rough waters of their portfolio realignment."

Why do you post this like it's a fact? Even the "OP" said "Heard that too" (replying to a similar post) so that it is just a rumour. Anyone who has read this board for more than 10 days, knows that 90% of the "confirmed" rumours turn out to be naught.

Yeah, go ahead losers, and hit me with a "-" reaction, I am just being a realist and don't spend my days dreaming of GF's and TC's demise...Get over it, GF didn't go down in flames when you left and your precious ego is bruised.

If they keep pivoting they may end up back where they started.
