I am so tired of working for this company that treats its employees like sh--. I made the decision that I am leaving months ago but have only stayed because of the damage it would cause to my team if their only remaining senior engineer left during a hiring freeze. Now with layoffs looming I finally have an out. Going to travel the world for a year then find a new job way outside this cutthroat industry.

I just did this after working this f***ing company for 10++ years. The last two, they moved me to two engineering roles without any regard for career plan, training whatsoever ... Still learning the job and then moved again ... I quit and then traveled to asia to spend half a year in beaches and exotic places. Funds? i cashed all of my top time worth 800++ hours plus some stock options that I need to sell anyway.
I now work with the federal government (secure, moderate stress, work from home, long weekends every other week) ... and have an upcoming job in a fab pending security clearance approval.
just go for it. You'll do fine.
Lol. You are SO important. I’m sure the company would just fold without you. Sarcasm off. You are nothing but a very minor cog in a large gets case. The will be ZERO impact when you leave. After all, how much was production or revenue affected when Appleton ate the joystick? Get over yourself.
Ditch the place, I actually stayed like you did for some good people I worked with but finally had enough and left. Sounds like you are doing well, so take some time off and enjoy yourself. You could be saving your own life by removing the high stress levels. Your coworkers are just a phone call away and you could be saving someone else’s job who really needs it.
