I'm a manager for a uniform company in Chicago and manage several hundred reps. I'm being recruited by mcgraw hill and cengage learning and I find it odd they would reach out to me. I have no experience in software or books and even brought this up during my interview. They said they're looking for aggressive no nonsense managers do bring new effective strong leadership to their new organization. They're offering me 150K to start and a lot of perks including much more autonomy. What is happening in this industry? Why aren't they recruiting people with book and software experience?

Most of the people I talk to are in complete denial over how bad this is going to be. I hear a lot of “Michael will be in charge, so we’ll be OK.” As if he knows of or cares about random front like employees. No one seems to realize that they are a salary on a spreadsheet.
I've been at this a long time, trust me these companies don't have to offer any severance, in fact most likely you will not see a severance since this isn't a simple layoff, this is classified as a merger. Nowhere in any labor law does it state employers are required to offer severances to employees during layoffs or mergers. Since it's obvious they're planning on doing a huge reorg along with a merger I would bet 10K no one is going to see a severance below a regional title level. Don't you get it? There's no money, this merger is last ditch effort to stay afloat and everyone will drown in order to keep the investors dry. Full stop period.
Didn’t they say no layoffs until 2020? I can absolutely see layoffs with no severance. Private equity owners are evil enough to do it, and the company is small potatoes nationally compared to a General Motors or Microsoft. They wouldn’t receive much, if any, press blowback.
Any updates on when the layoffs will begin? Also how confident are you in the no severance rumor? That would be devastating.
@ZUhid4Q-4vdd -- lack of severance would be a really sh--ty thing to do. MHE paid their normal package for the K-12 people that were let go last month.
@ZUhid4Q-3kqe It appears geographic territories will be much larger with fewer DM's managing more territories with more travel but increase in pay structure to compensate. MGMT also is aware current DM's don't have the grit and drive to accomplish anything other than excuses and scapegoating so they'll be sc-apped for sure. Good riddance. Also, heard rumors since these organizations are facing such steep losses that severances won't be offered, they just don't have the funds.
$150k base salary for a District Manager? ! Doesn’t they seem pretty high? I wonder if this is a sign of cutting one of the upper managerial layers- SVP or Director of Sales and then giving more responsibilities to the DMs for more pay? What layers of sales management is on the McGraw side?
No, it's true. I have over seven thousand contacts on linked in and I've had two email exchanges with people seeking out information about Cengage who are actively being recruited. The McCengage strategy appears to be just that, clean house and bring in new talent outside the industry. If this information is counter to you opinion then that's your problem.
No, I see things for what they are, and the McCengage apocalypse in 2020 will be brutal. However, I seriously doubt the company is recruiting as low as the sales manager position as the deal still has to clear regulatory hurdles. And some variation of this post has come up at least 3 times now with the same details. It’s trolling.
[email protected] I see this a lot. Whenever someone at Cengage hears the truth, they claim 'fake news' or 'troll'... Drunk on koolaid this one is.
It's rather clear after all these inquiries that CenMcGraw will be implementing major changes since they're recruiting from outside the industry. Yes, it's true, this golden goose has been cooked in the exact same fashion pharmaceutical sales has been destroyed. I don't envy those who are left. It is true this publishing industry has been absolutely ruined by r e d lip stic k and short s ki rts we all know this but it went a few steps too far. There is a reason publishing is a female majority industry just like pharmacy, make no mistake and the chickens have come home to roost, my little hens. You are screwed. Apply AOC #13 red lip s tick and smile... :)
