How does everyone in Mason, Clifton Park and Farmington Hills feel about the free gym, beer tap, wine fridge and snacks? We’re not getting too many PERKS, PERKS, PERKS! out here in FH.

Clifton Park has none of those perks. They keep taking everything away. We are lucky we get free coffee and creamer.

In SE Michigan, where Farmington Hills is located, the top talent typically goes to the auto industry where the pay is the highest. Gale/Cengage in Farmington Hills mostly attracts liberal arts grads who don't know what to do with their career. There isn't a lot of recruiting because these folks are usually happy to just have a job. Management is usually promoted from within the ranks. If someone is very talented and doesn't get promoted quickly, they typically leave and go to an industry where the pay is better. The employees who stay that haven't been promoted usually toil away at the same job with little or no advancement because, frankly, they don't have anywhere else to go. That's why there isn't a whole lot of effort around perks or retention compared to a Boston or San Francisco (where Cengage couldn't even compete). It's a strange insular little culture they have.

FH doesn't have to work as hard to attract talent as Boston does. If it makes you feel better there have been beer fridges, free lunch Weds (yes, it's supposed to be for WISE but the whole building goes) and there was a free gym in Boston for years until Rue needed the space for offices.

Well, in Boston, before the move, only select groups/floors had the perks.
