Dont Bother

Bookseller/Customer Service (Former Employee) – Huntington Beach, CA – May 24, 2019

Management was horrendous. Sure, it's great to work here if you have no other option. At least, this is true for the Huntington Beach Branch in CA. It is clear as to why, Barnes and Noble is dying.

The females that had worked there for years were spiteful and mean.

The store in ridgecrest was small. At a glance one would think it would be a nice environment but the office lady made spiteful comments to me and directed to to me because my glasses were thick and it took me a little longer at times to find the screw numbers or names of books. Her rudeness made what I thought would be a pleasant work environment stressful and I ended up quitting because her rudeness made me feel bad about myself because I know I have to wear glasses, but no one likes likes to be poked fun of or be the center of jokes behind ones back. As a book store- I like the store in Glendale but the store in ridgecrest was small minded and a real bed sore.

Wouldn’t even recommend to someone I hated

I highly disliked this job due to the managements unwillingness to listen to employees issues. Such an unorganized management team. The pay s---s and my little brother who worked at Bojangles in my middle of nowhere town even made more per hour than I did. You may get assigned to one position for a certain day, but you will be working all positions because “someone was sick” or “no one else wants to”. I even contacted the corporate office concerning the ridiculous mess that my store was and they offered 0 help. Never work there unless you’re ready to be payed a fraction of what you’re owed for the work you do and to be screamed at for not doing a job that isn’t your responsibility.

Terrible management

This is was the worst job I ever had. They took advantage of how hard I worked by refusing to respect my time and refusing to pay me more. I hesitate to even shop at Barnes & Noble anymore.

“. I called the Tennessee Board of Health in that county to investigate.”

GREAT IDEA. We should all call and report the new BN cleaning “standards”.

I’m sure quite a few cafes , Like the one reported in Tennessee, will have to come up to normal acceptable standards or risk fines ( which BN can’t afford if they can’t afford bags) or shut downs.

“I read a post earlier about the stores being dirty. Bathrooms & cafe. Then the post is gone...

it is relevant to the layoffs. BN got rid of cleaning companies. Depending on uninvested part timers to keep up standards for customers.”

Yes. I am the one who put up the post about the filthy bathrooms in the café being disgusting. And it was taken down. I called the Tennessee Board of Health i yes. “Yup. They also laid off maintenance staff last year at many of their stores. They just assumed the customers would clean up after themselves.”

I can see corporate thinking that.

After all, if s customer wants a bag, to protect their book if it’s raining out, they have to bring their own.

"It’s all true. The once high cleaning standards in the cafe, have gone out the window."

Kind of hard to maintain cleanliness when there's hardly any staff.

"I won’t eat in the cafe anymore., even with a 30% discount. Was told it was once 50%."

Yup. They lowered it a year ago.

It’s all true. The once high cleaning standards in the cafe, have gone out the window.i told the CM there’s mold in the ice machine. Was told it’s not mold, just a discoloration. I didn’t have another shift for 3 days, it’s still there ! I won’t eat in the cafe anymore., even with a 30% discount. Was told it was once 50%.

They lowered the discount and the standards? I’ve applied to Starbucks and was told they’ve heard how bad the cafes look. Was told if I get the job I’ll be re-taught how to clean.

“just stop it the negativity is so boring....”

The negativity is absolutely warranted! This once great company turned its back on its loyal, competent, career employees. Discarded them like trash.

And now the stores are dirty( no cleaning services), no bags to give customers. Customer complaints have soared because books don’t get to shelves in a timely manner. Old issues of magazines clutter the stands while their monthly replacement sits in boxes. Employee discount on food slashed 20%.

This company’s POOR DECISIONS warrants negativity! It’s negative decisions have affected those fired, those who remain and the customers who are foolish enough to think it’s still an honorable, upstanding company.

You can’t treat people the way BN does and not expect negativity.

"just stop it the negativity is so boring...."

With the lack of capitalization and appalling grammar, this might be somebody from the home office.

Interestingly, the name of this site isn't "Fond Nostalgia of a Great Job.com," it's thelayoff.com. Go figure that there'd be some negativity.
