Thread regarding McGraw-Hill Cos. layoffs

What reps will be retained....?

How worried should I be with MH taking over as CEO? How will the sales force be determined? Who will run it EM/MGH or ER/CL? The Pearson reorg seemed to favor those with PH ties so worried Cengage reps will have the advantage.

Everyone will have a target on their backs :) Additionally, don't be surprised when the McGraw office in NYC is closed. Rumor is everyone in NYC is being relocated downtown (that is if you have a job come 2020). And everyone who is still left at Cengage is no doubt subject to the backstabbing behavior of longtime Cengage employees who have PTSD from all of the reorgs over the past 7 years. The beauty of quitting this 3 ring circus before the last round of layoffs is that I will no longer be subject to the SVPs and VPs who couldn't make it at Pearson or in another industry and think they are actually succeeding in tech, product, sales and marketing. The Cengage profits and products show that no one actually knows what they are doing at this company.

Looking at positions not people is how Cengage has been able to manage their ongoing purges without getting slapped with wrongful termination lawsuits. Everyone knows who the dead weight is, but cleaning house is not possible since everyone gets good performance reviews. Instead the company has a "reorg" every 6 or 12 months in order to reduce headcount by "closing positions." If you tell someone the position no longer exists, they can't legally challenge it on the basis of performance or discrimination. The company then hires someone else to do essentially the same work with a different title and smaller salary. You can bet this process will go into hyperdrive once the merger is completed.

Cengage looks at positions not people. I had two employees on my team. One was dead weight I would have loved the chance to get rid of, the other had been with the company for over ten years and was great.

I was told to fire my best person because of what list they worked on. I would have loved to get rid of dead weight and shift things around but the orders came from above about what position would be closed.

If you’re in sales numbers will be looked at. Any other business unit and performance won’t even be considered.

Pearson reorg SEEMED to favor? If anyone worked at AWBC/L or eCollege they had a target on their backs. And the people still there (management) have always been part of the problem. I hope good people are treated fairly here. Save for a few years, MH has always been based more on merit than the other orgs.

Considering how many Cengage employees MH has laid off during his tenure, I don't think it will make any difference if you previously worked for McGraw or Cengage. It's all going to come down to cost savings.
