Thread regarding Varian Medical Systems Inc. layoffs

Gone but not forgotten

Was just laid off from VMS after 16 great years. No warning or anything. Everyone shocked as I was not considered deadweight by any means by anyone.

not all depts are bad but some are. Unfortunately there seems to be a trend. Take Product Management (Corey Z) very confusing. You ask management leads a direct question and they give some long winded speech (they are very good at that). Also they lost some real key contributors which understood not only their responsibilities but the ones around them. Some REAL domain experts are gone and the managements is absolutely clueless on what they have lost. I guess it starts at the top. Wonder where we will be in a few years. RIP my RIF colleagues!

out of nowhere, Varian reduces its workforce by a little over 1%. A lot of worker bees led to the door after they arrived to work. Not just support staff or those who like collecting paychecks with little output. but a lot of people that really contributed to bottom line. Clearly Management has new priorities (the culture of people is being replaced by the culture of the stock price). Mid and upper management is pretty terrible at what they do. obvious older and higher paid/higher tenured employees targeted. Dow's bonus incentivized by growing the bottom line. In a market that's pretty flat, the only thing he can do is cut, cut, cut.
