** Portland Art Museum announces layoffs, new visitor experience **

- A financial restructuring at the Portland Art Museum has resulted in layoffs and a change in the way the museum staff interacts with visitors.
- The museum’s new visitor services associates, part of a new visitor services department that combines security and front desk functions, are tasked with delivering “high levels of customer service” from selling admission tickets to offering gallery maps to talking with visitors about the museum's collection, said Brian Ferriso, the museum’s director and chief curator. Recent job postings for visitor services roles say in part, “Staff in this role proactively interact with Museum visitors to provide exceptional customer service.”
Ferriso said the staff reduction came in response to two external factors.
On the revenue side, the museum is receiving less money from local foundations and the Regional Arts and Culture Council, which funnels public and private funds to artists and arts organizations.
