Thread regarding Waters Corp. layoffs

My manager consistently sets me up for failure. How can I deal with this?

Why do some managers deliberately strive for the failure of their direct reports? Is there some financial incentive for them if this occurs?

At the very least, I hope your manager treats you with respect and doesn’t resort to yelling or belittling. I’ve heard numerous stories about managers at HQ who do just that, and it’s concerning that HR seems to protect them.

Waters is chock full of bad managers. I have one that does this because she isn’t competent nor confident in her abilities.

Many managers at waters shouldn’t be in their roles

Some people are just sadists.
They get off on watching others squirm.
They take their position of (limited) "power" to try to squeeze the joy/ healthful growth out of others.
So go grey rock...don't give them any indication that it's bothering you, don't kiss their @ss to try to get into their good graces (they'll never allow you to do so anyway); just be stoic, but silently determined.

Pretend as if you aren't noticing what they're doing to you, while stealthily and determinedly go full-on finding a different position elsewhere. With this person you'd be relying on re: recommendations, your best bet will be to look outside of the company, rather than trying for either a lateral or upward move within.
