Thread regarding Delaware layoffs

Cuts are expected!

Delaware school districts are facing a funding crisis.

Recent referendums failed in both the Indian River and Smyrna districts. Without voter approval, both districts now must make deep budget cuts. Indian River’s $22.5 million request was voted down. Leaders say this will mean layoffs, bigger class sizes and fewer programs.

Superintendent Jay Owens of Indian River said he respects the outcome. But he warned of hard decisions ahead. The district hasn’t raised local funding since 2017. Costs have grown faster than revenue.

Programs at risk include the International Baccalaureate curriculum and middle school sports. Teachers may be reassigned to cover essential courses. Some could lose their jobs altogether.

Teachers like Jordan Marvel already see the effects. He fears losing his psychology class and extracurricular coaching role. He also knows colleagues applying for jobs elsewhere. Morale is low. Many feel their jobs are no longer secure.

Smyrna's leadership hasn’t laid out a full plan yet. But Superintendent Judy Deborah confirmed raises are off the table. Cuts are expected.

The situation is pushing some educators to leave. The financial uncertainty is too great. Indian River plans to hold another referendum later this year. Until then, school leaders will need to find short-term solutions. That may include cutting staff and programs.

Delaware’s school funding model is under stress. More support may be needed to keep classrooms staffed and students supported.
