Enough with one-size-fits-all mandates

Let each operating company at AEP run its own show instead of cramming the same one-size-fits-all mandates down everyone’s throat. What works in Kentucky might completely flop in Ohio or Texas. This top-down model is disconnected from how things actually operate on the ground. Local teams understand their challenges far better than someone sitting in New Albany. Forcing uniformity just slows everything down and frustrates people who know what they’re doing.

While it might look like "top-down" uniformity from the outside, several of the engineering teams are actually deeply embedded within their specific territories. Even though they report up to central leadership in 1RP, these teams are positioned on the ground specifically to interface with the OpCos as their primary customers.

The whole goal of this structure is to learn those local pain points firsthand and use that "ground truth" to drive better standards. For example, many of our current standards actually originated from teams located in AEP Texas (both TNC & TCC regions) and SWEPCO. Even though those folks are part of a central organization, the standards they develop are born from the specific challenges of those operating companies, not just dreamed up in a vacuum in New Albany.

That sounds very reasonable. Too reasonable for current leadership.
