Richmond’s SunPower Corporation, a decades-old solar power company now on the brink of bankruptcy, has announced plans to lay off as many as 290 California workers.
The company disclosed the cuts in a WARN filing on July 26, as is required in the event of mass layoffs under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The filing said SunPower is aiming to avoid some of the cuts, but that there is “no guarantee” it will be able to save the jobs. As many as 182 workers at the company’s Richmond headquarters are threatened, plus up to 20 in Berkeley, 19 in North Hollywood, 18 in Ontario, 16 in Elk Grove, 13 in Santee, and 11 each in San Jose and Anaheim.
Workers have been warned that they’re on the chopping block and that the layoffs would likely span from mid-September to early November, the notice said. The filing blamed “recent financial circumstances” for the cuts but didn’t go into more detail. SunPower didn’t respond to SFGATE’s request for comment.
