At the end of the day it depends on what group you are in at either company. At Xilinx, are you going into a group that has hard deliverables that are easy to measure or are you in one of the groups that have soft deliverables? Same for Apple. The more abstract what you have to do the better your survivability. Both companies chip design groups are meat grinders.

I would say redefine job safety. Apple will get you get yers down the road what more can you ask for these days.
