Novant Health Inc. confirmed Tuesday that 23 job positions have been eliminated systemwide, but did not say how many were local.
Employees told the Winston-Salem Journal that those affected at Forsyth Medical Center were senior level nurses, nurse managers and patient diabetes educators.
They said the positions were cut from its readmission and call-a-nurse operations, with some affected employees having worked more than 20 years at the hospital.
Novant manages Forsyth, Clemmons, Kernersville and Thomasville medical centers in the Triad, as well as 10 other hospitals or emergency rooms in its four-state territory. The system has 25,000 employees, including about 5,000 in the Triad.
Novant said in a statement that the job cuts were done “to better reflect the needs of one area of business.”
“We are hopeful that most, if not all, of those people will find new roles within the organization, as we are actively recruiting for various positions in all of our communities.”
Novant said affected employees have received transition packages that include internal and external career support services and resources.
It is the first workforce reduction news connected to Forsyth since July 2015 when Novant said it was letting go up to 400 employees systemwide as part of a reorganization initiative that began in November 2014.
The system did not provide a workforce reduction per market.
As part of the reorganization, Novant reclassified the titles and duties for medical-unit secretaries, as well as cut their pay.
The implementation of electronic health records at Novant facilities over the past year has led to a reduced workload for the medical secretaries, Novant said.
“The total number of individuals affected is 157, which includes employees in both Charlotte and Winston-Salem,” Novant spokeswoman Robin Baltimore said.
“We do not have the specific number broken down by market.”
The Charlotte Observer reported the pay cut could be up to 10 percent.
In May 2012, the system eliminated 150 Triad positions as part of ending 289 positions systemwide. Carl Armato, president and chief executive of Novant, said at that time that Novant eliminated 82 management and 207 staff positions.
In April 2012, Novant outsourced the medical transcriptionist work of 69 full-time employees to Transcend Services Inc., based in Norcross, Ga. It is not clear how many Novant employees went to work for Transcend.
