HealthSouth, the rehabilitation hospital in downtown Erie, is confirming some significant layoffs. News of the cuts came as a tough blow for some nurses with 20 or 25 years of service at the facility, who say the layoffs came without warning.

HealthSouth is a 108 bed in-patient rehabilitation hospital on East 2nd Street in Erie. Casey Lassiter, a HealthSouth spokesperson out of the corporate office in Alabama confirmed the cuts in the workforce. "To appropriately serve patients throughout the Northwest Pennsylvania, West New York and Northeast Ohio region, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Erie has made a small reduction in our workforce," said Lassiter.

Our sources tell us that 18 jobs were cut, including five LPN's, transport staff that moves patients to other appointments, and dietary staff as well. They also say that the patient census is down from a norm of 70 to numbers in the 40's, adding that the latest job cuts follow a trend of staff reductions in recent years.

In a written statement Lassiter also said, "At times the capacity and acuity of our patients requires us to make difficult decisions regarding the structure of our hospital staff."
