Sure is. My department has been treating us like children and obsessively micro-managing and pressuring us about it. Gross. Definitely going to try to move even though my role is very stable. Don’t make enough money to live, anyway.

I think once a month party is the best idea I have heard around collaboration/socialization.
Perhaps it would make some people more tolerable if I talked with them over beers.

Management needs to wake up and realize that we are not interested in long expensive commutes to find an empty office. Actually it’s depressing walking into an empty office and feeling like you have wasted your time and money commuting to the office. We are looking to do our jobs and at the same time have a family life. Quit pushing collaboration down our throats, we communicate just fine through zoom. How about once a month throwing a get together event were we can socialize with our colleagues and peers.

it was always dead. looking back I recollect how many nights and weekends I used to spend doing actual work since office was just meetings after meetings to talk about the work I did at home. Even if I tried to do anything, the cubicles next door would be in calls and I couldn't concentrate. Half the time I needed books and papers to refer to...which would be at home.

And yes..I write code. I manage a large team that writes code. And we have been super productive for the last 2.5 years. Productive, happy, with time at nights and weekends to spend with friends and family. This decision is obviously not made by people who have ever done heads down knowledge work. This was a decision made by people who measure productivity by counting number of meetings held, number of 'casual conversations' and being the in-betweener talking heads, shuffling paper and deck, taking credit for work that they could never do.
