Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Post Round 4

How do you think the workload looks like post the selection? Would they be able to fire you and would you get severance if they do...?

Remember there will be company wide change freeze starting Dec 15th thru Jan 10th, That's when the systems are the most reliable because all those developers are not messing with everything. Take vacation before and after those dates and come back towards the end of January. Once we are back the first Qtrs will be spent in useless Town Halls listening to the boy scouts yelping about Agile and Digital etc. blah blah and PMP goal setting and so on, don't forget to appear all excited so they think you are onboard and before you know it the spring will be here.

Expect to be slammed as soon as people are named in roles. Have to transition from those left standing and get the new platforms ready to go. Vacation in Nov/Dec will not happen for most.

If this transformation is done right, then people should expect more work or at least have work that is more equitably distributed. Have witnessed so many slackers, including so many in management positions who have no idea or care about who is busy and who is not (as long as they weren’t bothered they were good...).

Chevron has gone overboard with emphasis on work life balance. So many whiners in IT who think they should be paid like software engineers at startup companies or at Google or Facebook who work 60-80 hour/week to develop software products to make money, unlike Chevron software engineers who configure purchased software. Big difference. If the Chevron software engineers think they’re so great why don’t they go work for IT companies??? Because they aren’t that great or know they have it cush at Chevron.

Hope management won’t cave into these whiny software engineers demands for higher pay. The cream of the crop software engineers don’t work at Chevron for a reason.

The workloads will be much higher. The days of upper management caring about their employees and trying to maintain work life balance are pretty much gone here and it will most likely continue to decline no matter how much they say to take care of yourself in town halls.

Everything will now be on the safe agile train .... Meetings with the scrumbag every day for only 20 minutes if you are super lucky. More time spent talking about the work and sculpting stories than actually doing the work ...

It will be chaos, but the good news is that’s it’s virtually impossible to get fired. You have to do some really heinous or incompetent stuff to get canned. Mere garden variety underperformance in a new role doing the work of three people after a re-org won’t get you fired.

Most jobs have been rewritten, they’ve said in numerous meetings plan for major disruption, be patient. When SJVBU went through their last reorganization “functional transformation”, people were walking around for six months not knowing what their job was. So plan in many instances, for that to be the case. But it will eventually iron out. As someone who’s been through many of these, if you are lucky enough to hang on, just be patient and ask your supervisor how you can help get your team aligned. Be proactive where you can. Good luck!

Do not be naive, the workload will be more, the new org chart and all the talk is to fool many and give hope for some big change, that never happens by org chart changes, the processes are still in place, the guys familiar with those processes for the past 25 years are also still in charge, did they provide any training? Are they planning to spend time and money for any true cultural change, trainings to enable the company as a whole with new business model? Oh well I think you got your answer.

My guess is there will be chaos in the new year as folks try and figure out the new org chart and roles. The real question for me is what office work will look like in 2021? Seems like many/most companies are moving to some sort of hybrid in-office/wfh model.

I just can't see how efficient it is when you layoff a bunch of people who have the domain/ technical knowledge... it seems like those who're still around will take up multiple loads while not knowing wtf we're doing...

its holiday season and people will be cashing their vacation days, so the Nov/Dec are probably pretty quiet...

It will get easier (hopefully) less supervisors adding more useless process to the load .

Work load never decreases only the willingness or ability to pay for it does....
