Thread regarding Nationwide (Insurance and Financial Services) layoffs

How are you coping with anxiety?

Despite the difficult situation on the market and the fact that I can’t find another job, I try not to burden myself with layoffs anymore. It’s hard because of existential issues, but this company is sinking deeper and deeper and even if I don’t get laid off now, in the end I would definitely be forced to resign by myself as the situation and atmosphere has become unbearable.

I will recommend the best time to find another job is when you are currently employed. There is an unfair but very real stigma that those laid off are not the strongest performers, so if you sense things are going to go badly in the future, start applying everywhere now. There are also new options in remote jobs because of the pandemic that were not available before.

I’ve been casting around in my mind for ways to cope with the intense frustration and depression caused by the changed work atmosphere. I considered medication but rejected it. Pharmaceuticals are either addictive or have unpleasant after effects(SSRIs) when you go off them. I finally decided today to just dis-engage. Or try to. I do my job to the best of my ability. I have the luxury of not being salaried so I don’t have to let my job become a huge time s—. Whatever happens, happens.

I must say that the massive number of changes and unnecessary responsibilities added are making this a very unpleasant place to work. Especially during the pandemic. As great as they were about protecting us from the virus, we are certainly paying for it with everything else.

I will say that by not taking and by not making the time to cope and deal with anxiety or other issues it snow-balled for me. I am now medicated because of it. I am taking it one day at a time. I thought that I was fine but I knew different. I will say that colleagues that worked in claims were absolutely gobsmacked and decimated by what has happened. I hope that those who work in the servicing centers do not face any layoffs or cuts. Sadly, the company did not hire a soul until the end of 2020 in my department. At that point, for me, the damage was already done. I enjoyed speaking with most members but grew disheartened by the know-it-all members/agents who overtook the good. It grew to be just one bad call after another. Not really sure how a person deals with it or copes. A good therapist was a fine start. Am I cynical in thinking that this was planned in part to stick to the front line associates in claims/servicing? Slim it all down by not laying people off but by creating a pressurized environment in which people seek out other opportunities through attrition.

I've been happy to help customers to the best of my ability( the ones that allow me to help, not the know it alls). That truly is the only reason I've made it this far, because I do enjoy helping people when I can.

Unfortunately regardless of the "numbers" that are presented to us from up above, we all know( the ones that actually work claims)that the company's focus on true customer service and customer focus has dropped as we, the ones that made the last few cuts, are all limited and overloaded to the max. MANY reps in several departments I've spoken to say the same.
