I worked in IT for some time but have since left. It's plagued with poor senior management decisions, corruption and conflict of interest, lack of coherent strategy and is totally wasteful.
Being forced to use certain products from certain vendors - including some that are Cisco owned that are weak and get little investment is a k–ler. That being said in among this burning wreck of a department I've met some amazing and very clever people. Some will be lifelong friends. Morale is pretty low and with under-resourcing and stalled decision making from the CIO down things are only getting worse. I did some interesting projects many years ago but IT are no longer allowed to be innovative or focus on the end user. It's all about money, outsourcing and which industry friends you can shovel cash to. Share price is king.
In what, 10 years of working at Cisco and opening tickets with IT for all sorts of stuff, I have to say, in general, the level of support is absolutely horrendous. How many times have I had to escalate to management for bad support I received, and I will never stop doing it. I just look at the management team of the person who gave me c-appy support and start calling up the chain, I really couldnt give a flying .... what people think of me, I just go up the chain and complain, it's so pathetic how little people can care about giving you good service, they just turn off their brains and they dont care. Probably has resulted in quite a number of interesting conversations from managers to unqualified underlings. Wow its been maybe almost a year since I had a serious complaint, really overdue for one but I've had no issues as of late, hope I am not jinxing myself
GIS is the worst by far, management in GIS is none existent, most people have been hit by the LRs rest are waiting in the firing line. New CIO is corrupt same goes for all the management team openly lying no one trusts the mangement anymore. Agile destroyed IT and now this new CIO is pushing a new process that her right hand man own company has built. Keep away from GIS if you work in IT walk away and find something else working in Walmart would be a better option.
Start your job search immediately, but hang in there as long as you can until you find a better opportunity elsewhere. My coworker who joined ~6 months ago was affected by the recent LR as well. No one is safe.
It’s a cost center - figure out what that means and then decide if you want to work there. Simple story.
It’s like when you were a kid and your 0parents gave you pocket money to go do something hopefully fruitful with it. The company gives it money to run the inside affairs - it doesn’t make any money so imagine how great it would be to work there.
IT is probably the worst organization at Cisco.
go twitter and "#cisco. #lovewhere you work. you will probably get a promotion,
Leave if you can, but don't leave without an alternative job. Don't be stupid.
The company became so misandric, that you have to put up with quotas and garbage hiring standards.
It's becoming the next hive for radical feminists! (or it already became one)
You don't get opportunities anymore, because all they care about is "women in ..." c-ap.
Drink that koolaid if are planning to stick around.
And dare you question that, you will be branded as a "misogynist". They can't even use logic anymore.
I'm not saying Cisco is better but keep in mind that no place is perfect. You just have to find one you can tolerate. I've been through 4 companies in my 25+yr career and I've seen bad from them all. Although the more recent company seems the worst as lies are not as easily hidden in today's age.
I would add not to quit before you have a new position. Getting a new job when you are unemployed is definitely no bueno.
IT is an extremely corrupt disaster. Layers of incompetent and unethical management.
Transfer into a sales role, or leave the company.
Run.
Which BU? Except for very few teams in Cisco, all are garbage. I used to work there. Best is to leave that hell hole. I was in good teams and worked on new products and decent tech. Compared to many other teams with constant layoffs and and outdated tech and old products. Still, the only decision I made right is that I quit. I did not even get the package. That place is bad for anyone's career who wants to learn. Even if they match you a counter or beat it, JUST LEAVE you will be thankful in future. I know so many Cisco people who have fear setting in to even interview because they have learnt nothing or are outdated or have been in Cisco for so many years where they are just not brave enough now to do anything to get out of that miserable place. And I also know some who enjoyed the ride for 10 years and then now are suddenly waking up unhappy realizing that they wasted time and did not grow or have low pay. And now some of these who woke up late, can get a job still but many are not even given proper interview calls from good companies because of the bad brand of Cisco. I left and I hope my Cisco black spot on my resume is washed off. I don't know you or your priorities, but if you are sincere about your tech career and want to grow and make good money and believe in hard work and good ethics, trust me JUST QUIT, I MEAN IT
A few months? Too early for you to see.
Also, all you see a few mo in, you should have seen during interviewing.
A quick scan of glassdoor and this site also would have given you an idea... its on you...
