Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Management and transparency

Why is our management so unwilling to communicate openly? Instead of offering transparency, they choose to keep us in the dark, leaving layoffs to feel like sudden, unexpected blows. Why not keep us informed and allow us to prepare, both mentally and otherwise, for what lies ahead? This lack of transparency is a surefire way to destroy employee morale. I will never understand this approach.

It is absolutely cray cray with a capital Cray that "leaders" would rather root out people "spreading rumors" than fix the issues people are talking about.

Hey fearless leaders, people wouldn't have anything to talk about if you 1. Are transparent 2. Fix the issue(s).

Hey McKinsey, suggest this post and charge them $1000 an hour. I'll give it to ya free as long as someone takes action.

You want transparency; there's a RIF happening 3/20. It will impact GBD and commercial and will impact frontline staff. Everyone identified will be given 30 days. It's being driven by performance evaluations.

@gd+1jmbqe7jq - "A manager in our group not only said there were no layoffs (the day after) but wanted names of people who were spreading rumors. I know she knew layoffs were going to happen a month prior."

This sounds like leadership behavior from the likes of the KGB or the Stasi. Did she conduct an interrogation session with each naughty person she identified?

Management is unwilling to be transparent because many of them know the truth. Lots of us and possibly them will be laid off or rebaged. They can’t admit they had to choose someone last round because next round it could be you. What gets me is, not the lack of transparency but the flat out lies. A manager in our group not only said there were no layoffs (the day after) but wanted names of people who were spreading rumors. I know she knew layoffs were going to happen a month prior. Some just rule with fear and intimidation to keep people working. I’m just quietly quitting. Doing the job of 2 other laid off people and got meets across the board, like my manager was just too lazy to do anything else and hides under the guise of level setting. Which is another crazy topic entirely.

@eh+1jmbqe7jq - "You can read between the lines, they were layoffs on January 28. There was a Townhall the week before, and the finance guy was all gloom and doom and implied that changes were going to come in order to meet financial targets. Then two days later we got a cryptic corporate speak email from Gail, that also implied cuts were coming. That is their communication."

Exactly. You have to learn to read their coded language. If they were to speak frankly and provide factual details, there would be leaks to Wall Street and then the company stock price would suffer. A primary skill of corporate executives is to talk 'code'. It is similar to the charades you see from White House press secretaries.

Take some personal responsibility. Always know that you and everyone around you is expendable. Always be ready with a plan B, C and D. This is corporate America. There is no loyalty, there never has been and never will be. Take care of and protect yourself.

@c4+1jmbqe7jq, if your director really said to have a plan B, 1) I’m shocked and 2) They must know/feel like they are gone too. Surprised the director would even hint around layoffs.

there is such thing as a WARN notice. But usually those apply to mass layoffs. Lately I've just been watching a few team members get picked off and fed to Gail. She doesn't come back to feed for a few months. Sacrifice them to the beast it will appease the gods!

because they don't want you to stop working or doing their bidding while they still need you. It's not over until they say it is.

My director met with my team last week and talked about the IT dept being rebadged and basically telling us to have a Plan B and to even look for other jobs I think she told us as much as she ‘could’ But definitely went away feeling despair I mean WTf is my plan B other than finding another job if I get let go

They do not know how to run a company.

So you expected folks to be “informed” that they will be laid off in advance? That will never happen and that is not just an anthem thing, it’s a corporate america thing. I get it, this company s u c k s currently but expecting to get advance notice of a lay off is unrealistic.

They're afraid of mass quitting and then the wheels will really come off.
