Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Stay away

Make sure you conform and there is nothing different about you compared to the gang already there. You'll be persecuted until you have to quit your job if you are different and the people doing it will tell you that you deserve it. Don't challenge anyone on anything ,you'll be run off. Recognize that almost all 'professional' staff are rejects from other more successful companies and you shouldn't have any problems setting appropriate levels of expectations. Keep your head down and don't make mistakes, other people will grab on to them to make themselves look good at your expense. Oxys 9/80 schedule is really a 9/89 - they will expect you in on your Friday off while making sure they get their bonus hours the other 9 days. It works out at roughly a 9% pay decrease for your hours worked. Don't take an overseas assignment (Oxy have failed everywhere, so that shouldn't be an issue) because you have to work 6 weeks on 1 week off rotation without seeing your family and if you don't like it, they will run you off. Don't expect professional development or support, you are expected to know everything all the time. They aren't wasting money on training and development. If you like persecuting others and helping HR to make your target pay for it, you will fit straight in at Oxy. Other than that, the low pay, no career prospects, track record of fatalities and serious EPA violations and school yard mentality, you should do very well.

This was posted by @U7deFjP-8iku in another thread, but it is such a perfect description of Occidental that it needed to be on the top.

Interesting gzng. Oxy must have had to change, they certainly couldn't keep going the way they were. Perhaps gzng embraces the culture more or fits in to the kind of company Oxy is, which is nothing to be proud of based on what Ive seen and heard first hand. Empowerment was very different when it was given to others to persecute and victimize people, especially when speaking up received further persecution and retlaiation. However, their track record of performance and disgrace with just about all assets will always speak for itself. Keep getting the word out about this company and, of course, good luck. You will need it.

Well, I have to say that I will defend Oxy . So far comparing with previous experiences/employer working for Oxy have been the best. I would not lie that we have some issues inside but the positive overcome the negative. At this particular moment is amazing how management is empowering individuals. In particular the leadership in my BU where we are becoming a role model. #leavenodoubt.

Sad to see the previous posts that is only reflecting that the management of that person fail to him. My recommendation: Speak up frontally with your manager. If this person does not listen, move up and knock doors. I am sure those will open.

good luck,

Is it any surprise that not one person from Oxy comes on here to try and refute these facts of defend the company they repeatedly state they are so proud of? Is it any surprise at all?

Don't forget Piper Alpha, Petrolia, Maynas Carijano, Thunderball, 35R gas line explosion, North Dakota purchase and sale at $1billion loss, Tatweer petroleum, Libya, ALL south American calamities and their total lack of being able to retain ANY professional staff on any level.
