Can someone explain to me the necessity of shop captains? With all the layoffs, why is Macy's now giving many of the former specialists the shop captain position? They basically are SSAs from what it sounds like. They are receiving a $3/hr raise to do what?

It is called "using people" It's just promoting people who need a paycheck and use them to do a manager's job. This too will catch up to all the companies who use workers as pawns especially when they are down.

It's just a way of shrinking the management. They are taking the top 3 hourly manager making them cover the whole store and demoting the rest. Then giving them a nice title because Macy's is to broke to give wage increases.
In our store they cancelled our 8 specialist positions, and replaced us all with 3 shop captains from unrelated areas. Then they did this "Total Store" crap where no one stays in a department long enough to learn anything, and told the Shop Captains and the Sales Managers it was their job to crosstrain everyone with no additional resources. Of course, those of us who were commission-based specialists, and now just salaried sales associates, are the ones getting stuck doing the training and answering all the questions, without even a by-your-leave. It's the Magic of Macy's®!
There have been no captains added in my store. They put out a list of responsibilities but said that there would be no salary increase for anyone accepting the position. Why would anyone do that?
Sounds like this ridiculous position is a waste. Who is making these decisions. Makes you wonder. Stock market sinking.
I never did understand what a Specialist did...except earn the extra money. Every associate helped the specialist by selling that item and never earned any money. What does a shop captain do to earn the extra $$$.
Our store got 3 captains. None of the specialists and the specialists had to interview for the captain positions. It is dumb.
