Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Layoff package-30 days to find new job--can you leave during this period?

You get a layoff package and have 30 days to find a job at Cisco. What happens if you leave for a new employer during that 30 days? Do you still get the rest of the package even though you didn't spend the 30 days looking for another job in Cisco?

Thanks for advice from you who have been through this.

Whatever you do, DO NOT SIGN the paper until the last day. Once you sign it, I believe they stop paying you for that month. So sign it the last day in order to get some extra $$$. I think you effectively lose your insurance as well if you sign it early. But i dont remember the exact detail. If you sign it on the last day ( i hope the beginning of the next month), they give you insurance for that month. Atleast this was what it was in Texas.

When you sign it, you will get your severence. I believe it is like 14 days or something to process it. I dont remember the exact detail.

And Good luck on your next adventure!!! Life is awesome on the other side. I was able to find a job within 2 month. Basically my severence was the bonus!!!

I was LR’ed in the September 2014 purge. The formal end of employment date was in October but I was told not to come into the office for the rest of the month. I believe this is how Cisco gets away without having to file a WARN before the bloodletting.

I called my buddy at a Juniper, interviewed a few days later and started at the beginning of October. Days before my official termination date. Nobody called or emailed me from Cisco about any knowledge transfer. It's all lip service and Cisco doesn't have the courtesy to hand you a towel after they're done reaching around you and yanking your Johnson.

If Cisco follows form, they'll give you your LR package and your manager or HR flunky will tell you not to come into the office. You may get instructions on returning company equipment but the next 30 days is "free" money.

Go start looking for the next job and start the new job as soon as possible. You are under no obligation to tell your new employer you're technically still employed by Cisco. As far as you and your new employer is concerned, your last day was the day they handed your the LR package and told you to stay away from the office.

Nor should you tell Cisco you are starting a new job. Unless your new employer does a bonehead move and call Cisco HR to verify employment, you're an ex-Cisco employee.

the 30 days is essentially “free” money, so if you leave before that, you dont get paid for those thirty days but you get the pkg effective your last day of employment
